US Stock Market Today: Wall Street futures pointed to another weaker opening on Wednesday as renewed U.S.-Iran military tensions pushed oil prices higher and added to inflation concerns. S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures declined, while investors also kept a close watch on rising Treasury yields and the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate outlook.

The latest market moves come after U.S. stocks ended sharply lower in the previous session. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.79%, the S&P 500 declined 0.71% and the Nasdaq Composite lost 1.03% on Tuesday as higher yields and rising crude prices weighed on risk appetite.

US Stock Market Today: Wall Street Futures Point To Weak Open

U.S. stock-index futures were under pressure before Wednesday’s opening bell. Dow E-minis were down 0.15%, S&P 500 E-minis slipped 0.25%, while Nasdaq 100 E-minis fell 0.52%, according to Reuters.

The technology-heavy Nasdaq futures showed the largest decline among the major contracts, highlighting continued sensitivity among growth stocks to higher interest-rate expectations.

US Stock Market Today: Oil Prices Rise As Iran Conflict Adds Supply Concerns

Oil prices remained a major driver for financial markets. Brent crude rose to around $95 a barrel, with the benchmark reaching its highest level since July 24 earlier in the session.

The renewed military confrontation between the United States and Iran has increased concerns about potential disruption to energy supplies, particularly around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz

Higher crude prices can create a difficult backdrop for stocks because they may increase inflationary pressure while simultaneously weighing on economic growth.

US Stock Market Today: Treasury Yields Add To Market Pressure

Rising Treasury yields are another key concern for investors. The global bond selloff has intensified as higher energy prices have revived inflation worries.

Reuters reported that the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield was approaching levels that could further challenge equities, with investors increasingly focused on whether persistent inflation could keep interest rates higher for longer.

Higher yields can particularly affect technology and other growth stocks because the value investors place on future earnings becomes less attractive when borrowing costs and discount rates rise.

US Stock Market Today: Fed Rate Outlook In Focus

The Federal Reserve’s next policy moves remain central to the market outlook. According to Reuters, market pricing for a possible September rate hike has increased sharply over the past week, although some analysts continue to view such a move as unlikely.

The central bank faces a difficult balance: higher oil prices could push inflation upward, while the resulting increase in costs could weaken economic activity.

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh has also emphasized the importance of bringing inflation back toward the central bank’s 2% target. Investors are therefore watching incoming inflation and employment data closely for clues about the policy path.

US Stock Market Today: Jobs Report Could Provide Fresh Market Signals

Investors are also looking ahead to the U.S. employment report due on Friday, September 4.

The jobs data could provide important clues about the strength of the U.S. economy and influence expectations for the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate decisions in the coming months. Reuters previously reported that investors were looking to the employment report for signs that could shape the next phase of the market rally.

US Stock Market Today: Energy Stocks Could Remain In Focus

The rise in crude prices has provided some support to energy-related shares even as the broader market remains under pressure.

Reuters reported that Chevron and Valero were among energy stocks gaining in premarket trading as Brent crude prices climbed. Dell and Hewlett Packard Enterprise also gained after upbeat earnings and optimism surrounding AI infrastructure, offering some pockets of strength amid broader weakness.

US Stock Market Today: September Seasonality Adds To Investor Caution

Market sentiment is also being affected by seasonal trends. September has historically been the weakest month of the year for the S&P 500, according to Reuters, adding another reason for investors to remain cautious following the sharp declines seen at the start of the month.

US Stock Market Today: What Investors Should Watch Today

Investors tracking the US stock market today will likely focus on:

  • S&P 500 futures: Down 0.25% before the open.

  • Nasdaq 100 futures: Down 0.52%, with technology shares particularly sensitive to higher yields.

  • Dow futures: Down 0.15%.

  • Oil prices: Brent crude trading around the mid-$90s per barrel.

  • Treasury yields: Rising amid renewed inflation concerns.

  • Fed policy: Markets reassessing expectations for September interest rates.

  • Iran tensions: Any further escalation could affect energy supplies and risk sentiment.

  • U.S. jobs report: Friday’s employment data could influence expectations for the Fed’s next move.

US Stock Market Today: Key Takeaway

Wall Street is entering Wednesday’s session under pressure as rising oil prices, higher Treasury yields and renewed U.S.-Iran tensions combine to raise concerns about inflation and interest rates. While some companies continue to benefit from strong AI-related demand and higher energy prices, broader investor sentiment remains cautious.

The immediate direction of the Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq will depend heavily on developments in the Middle East, movements in oil and bond markets and fresh signals about the Federal Reserve’s rate path. The upcoming U.S. jobs report will be particularly important for investors assessing whether monetary policy could remain restrictive for longer.
