US Stock Market Today: U.S. stock futures pointed to a higher Wall Street open on Monday, August 17, as technology and artificial intelligence-related shares gained while investors assessed oil prices, Federal Reserve rate expectations and upcoming retail earnings.

According to Reuters, Nasdaq futures gained about 0.5% and S&P 500 futures rose around 0.2% in early trading. Investors were also watching developments in the oil market and fresh economic signals for clues about the Federal Reserve’s next policy move.

Dow Jones Futures Today

Dow Jones futures were comparatively subdued as investors balanced gains in technology stocks against concerns over higher oil prices and the broader economic outlook. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has a different sector composition from the Nasdaq, meaning movements in technology stocks can have a smaller direct impact on the blue-chip index. Investors are therefore also watching energy prices, consumer companies and upcoming corporate earnings for direction.

Market participants remain focused on whether higher crude prices could add to inflationary pressure and influence expectations for Federal Reserve policy.

S&P 500 Futures Today

S&P 500 futures edged higher in premarket trading as gains in technology stocks helped support the broader market. The S&P 500 remains closely watched because it provides exposure to a wide range of major U.S. companies. Technology and AI-related shares have been important contributors to the index’s recent performance, although investors continue to assess whether elevated valuations can be justified by future earnings growth.

According to Reuters, investors are also assessing the latest economic data and the outlook for interest rates as they position for the trading week.

Nasdaq Futures Today

Nasdaq futures led the early gains, rising around 0.5% as technology and AI-related stocks advanced. Chip stocks were among the notable gainers in premarket trading. Reuters reported that Micron gained about 3%, Broadcom rose around 1.1% and Nvidia advanced roughly 0.6%, highlighting continued investor interest in the AI and semiconductor sectors.

The technology-heavy Nasdaq remains particularly sensitive to interest-rate expectations because higher borrowing costs can affect the valuation of growth companies.

AI Stocks Remain A Major Market Driver

Artificial intelligence continues to be one of the biggest themes influencing U.S. equities. Investor sentiment received support from developments surrounding AI company Anthropic, which has issued an ambitious revenue outlook. The news added to optimism about future demand for AI services and infrastructure. However, investors remain cautious about high valuations across parts of the technology sector. The key question is whether strong earnings and future AI demand can continue to support current share prices.

Federal Reserve Rate Outlook In Focus

The Federal Reserve’s interest-rate outlook remains another major catalyst for U.S. stocks. Recent economic data has affected expectations for the central bank’s next policy decision. Reuters reported that expectations for a September rate hike have weakened following softer economic indicators, including weaker retail sales and consumer sentiment.

A separate Reuters poll indicated that a strong majority of economists expect the Fed to keep its benchmark interest rate in the 3.50%-3.75% range through the end of 2026. For Wall Street, the direction of interest rates is especially important for technology and other growth stocks.

Oil Prices Add To Market Uncertainty

Oil prices are another key factor for investors today. Reuters reported that Brent crude was trading around $88.86 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was around $82.44 a barrel. Higher crude prices have added to concerns about inflation as markets continue to monitor developments involving the U.S., Iran and Middle East oil supplies.

A prolonged rise in energy prices could complicate the Federal Reserve’s efforts to bring inflation under control and could influence future rate expectations.

Retail Earnings Could Provide Consumer Clues

Investors are also preparing for earnings from major U.S. retailers, including Walmart and Home Depot. Retail earnings are particularly important because they can provide insight into consumer spending, pricing pressures and the broader health of the U.S. economy.

Reuters reported that U.S. retail sales fell in July for the first time in nine months, making upcoming corporate results even more important for investors assessing consumer resilience.

US Stock Market Today:  What Investors Should Watch Today

Several factors could determine the direction of U.S. stocks during Monday’s session:

  • Dow Jones futures: Investors are watching blue-chip stocks, oil prices and economic developments.

  • S&P 500 futures: Technology gains are helping support the broader index.

  • Nasdaq futures: AI and semiconductor stocks are providing early momentum.

  • AI stocks: Investors continue to monitor AI spending, earnings growth and valuations.

  • Federal Reserve: Rate expectations remain central to market sentiment.

  • Oil prices: Higher crude prices could increase inflation concerns.

  • Retail earnings: Walmart, Home Depot and other companies could provide fresh consumer-spending signals.

  • Geopolitical developments: Middle East tensions remain an important source of uncertainty for energy markets.

US Stock Market Today: Market Outlook

The US stock market outlook remains cautiously positive at the start of Monday’s trading session, with technology shares helping lift Nasdaq and S&P 500 futures.

However, investors face several competing signals. Strong AI momentum and technology gains are supporting equities, while higher oil prices, inflation risks and uncertainty over Federal Reserve policy could limit gains. The performance of the Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq will therefore remain closely linked to developments in technology stocks, crude oil prices, economic data, corporate earnings and expectations for interest rates. For investors, the main focus remains whether the current strength in AI and technology stocks can continue to offset broader macroeconomic and geopolitical risks.
