Gold and silver surged for their biggest weekly gains in months while precious metals rallied as well.

US Stock Market Today: Dow Jones Today

The Dow Industrial Average rose 107.62 points (0.20%) to 53,992.72 while strong buying interest in Amazon, Sherwin-Williams, Home Depot, Nvidia and Microsoft overshadowed weakness in Chevron, Caterpillar and Procter & Gamble, keeping the blue-chip index on track for another weekly gain.

US Stock Market Today: Nasdaq Today

Among US indices, the Nasdaq Composite performed best, rising 0.73% to 26,540.52. Investors bought up technology shares again as fears over further monetary tightening eased while semiconductor stocks were some of the biggest boosters of the rally.

US Stock Market Today: S&P 500 Today

The S&P 500 gained 23.89 points, or 0.31%, to 7,733.85 and the benchmark index has risen 3.37% in the past month and more than 21% in the past year, reflecting continued resilience despite high interest rates and global economic uncertainty.

What Is Happening in the US Stock Market Today?

Investor sentiment was buoyed after the July nonfarm payrolls report unexpectedly showed a decline of 23,000 jobs, versus expectations of an increase of 83,000. The report shows a cooling labor market even as hiring slowed, but investors see it as taking off the pressure on the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates further. Technology, software and semiconductor shares led the rebound while defensive and energy shares lagged.

Why Is US Stock Market Up Today?

Markets are rallying largely because investors believe the Federal Reserve is more likely to keep interest rates unchanged in September. Declining Treasury yields also helped equity valuations, especially for growth stocks. Robust corporate earnings from software and technology companies also raised market confidence and helped offset concerns about an economic growth slowdown.

US Stock Market Today: Big Tech Stocks Weigh On Market Sentiment

Technology was still the biggest driver of the market as Nvidia gained 1.58%, Amazon rose 1.68%, Microsoft advanced 0.63% and Tesla jumped 1.65%. Alphabet fell more than 1% but Micron Technology was down 2.69%, in continued stock-specific volatility across the sector while Nvidia remained the world’s largest listed company with a market capitalization of about $5.42 trillion.

US Stock Market Today: Rising Oil Prices Add To Market Concerns

Crude oil prices were relatively stable with Brent crude trading above $82 a barrel and WTI trading near $77. Investors kept a close eye on geopolitical developments, especially any discussions of the Strait of Hormuz, thru which a large share of the world’s oil passes, as disruptions to that supply could push inflation higher and make the Federal Reserve’s outlook for policy more complicated.

US Stock Market Today: Fed Rate Outlook Remains Key Market Driver

Wall Street is primarily driven by expectations about interest rates as Fed funds futures now imply that most traders see the central bank keeping its benchmark rate at 3.50% to 3.75% at the September meeting. Lower Treasury yields and weaker labor market data have raised hopes policy makers will pause rather than tighten monetary policy further.

Gold & Silver Prices Today

Precious metals gained sharply on safe-haven buying. Gold gained 2.28% to 4,336.44 with December futures reaching a high of 4,380.20, the highest since June. Silver climbed above $64 an ounce and was heading for its best week in months as investors bought the metal as a hedge against economic uncertainty.
