Why Are Sensex and Nifty Up Today?

The Indian stock market indexes, i.e., BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50, showed substantial upward movements on Friday, July 17, 2026, backed by solid performance from the Information Technology (IT) sector and favorable technical indicators. Though there was some weakness prevailing in various other Asian equity markets on account of persistent worries about geo-political situation in the Middle East region, Indian stock markets kept their pace of buying. The Sensex shot up by over 600 points to quote near 77,884 levels, whereas the Nifty 50 index surpassed the important 24,200 level mark.

Key Reasons Behind Today’s Market Rally

Strong IT Sector Performance Helps Investor Sentiment: The IT sector emerged as the largest driver behind the positive performance in the market with Tech Mahindra gaining over 3% on the back of an excellent performance in its June quarter. In the June quarter, net profit rose by 28.4%, prompting investors to accumulate stocks in other IT firms such as Infosys, TCS, and HCL Technologies.

Q1 Results Aid Financial Stocks to Move Higher: Corporate results were also driving investor sentiment with Jio Financial Services gaining almost 5% on the back of strong June quarter performance, driving the entire financial services sector.

Nifty Crosses Crucial 24,200 Resistance Mark: The Nifty 50 crossing above the crucial resistance level of 24,200 has also been encouraging fresh purchases among investors while at the same time, it has resulted in short covering and accumulation of long positions by traders in key stocks.

Investor Focus on Major Corporate Earnings: Market participants are also preparing themselves for key Q1 results of FY27, which include the result of heavyweight Reliance Industries (RIL) and private sector banks. Positive sentiments around results are helping the bulls to keep up with the momentum.

India Stock Market Today: Nifty & Sensex Trading Higher Today

The Indian benchmark indices extended their gains on Friday morning, July 17, 2026, with the BSE Sensex climbing over 700 points, despite weak global market signals. The rally was supported by strong buying interest in IT stocks, positive investor response to Jio Financial Services’ quarterly earnings, expectations of strong results from Reliance Industries, and renewed value buying in large-cap shares.
