UK Stock Market Today (August 26, 2026):  The FTSE 100 slipped slightly on Wednesday, ending its six-session winning streak as falling crude oil prices put pressure on energy stocks. BP dropped more than 2%, while Shell fell around 1.4%, with oil prices declining for a third straight session amid hopes that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could resume. Iran and Oman have discussed an interim arrangement aimed at facilitating the reopening of traffic through the strategic waterway.

Mining stocks offered some support to the index, with Antofagasta, Anglo American and Fresnillo each rising more than 1%. Entain and Persimmon also attracted attention after FTSE Russell indicated that both companies are expected to leave the FTSE 100 as part of its latest index reshuffle.

Meanwhile, UK energy regulator Ofgem announced that the energy price cap will increase by 4% from October, citing higher wholesale gas prices linked to the conflict in the Middle East. Investors are also closely watching Nvidia’s earnings, which could provide fresh clues about the strength and future direction of the global AI investment boom.

UK Stock Market Today (August 26): Why Is the FTSE 100 Down Today?

The FTSE 100 traded lower on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, snapping a six-session winning streak as a sharp decline in crude oil prices weighed on heavyweight energy stocks. The index opened about 0.21% lower, with BP and Shell among the biggest early drags.

The weakness in oil stocks came as Brent crude fell for a third consecutive session amid renewed hopes that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could resume following talks between Iran and Oman. Brent was trading around $86 a barrel, down more than 2% during the session.

UK Stock Market Today: Why Is FTSE 100 Down?

Falling crude oil prices weigh on energy stocks

The biggest pressure on the FTSE 100 came from its major oil producers. BP fell more than 2%, while Shell declined around 1.4% as crude prices extended their recent losses. Lower oil prices can weigh on the earnings outlook of large energy companies, making the sector a drag on the UK’s blue-chip index.

Strait of Hormuz reopening hopes

Oil prices came under pressure after Iran and Oman resumed discussions on managing shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The prospect of more vessels being able to pass through the strategically important waterway has eased some concerns about prolonged disruptions to global oil supplies.  However, the waterway has not been confirmed as fully reopened, meaning geopolitical developments remain an important risk for markets.

Mining stocks limit the FTSE 100’s decline

Mining companies provided some support to the index. Antofagasta, Anglo American and Fresnillo each gained more than 1%, helping offset some of the losses among energy stocks. The mixed performance highlights the different impact of falling commodity prices across sectors.

Investors await Nvidia earnings

Global investors are also focused on Nvidia’s second-quarter results, due later Wednesday. The results are being closely watched for signs of whether the massive investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure can continue. European technology stocks were under pressure ahead of the results, while investors also awaited US inflation data for additional clues about the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate outlook.

UK energy bills set to rise

Another development attracting investor attention is the UK’s energy price cap. Ofgem announced that the typical annual household energy bill will rise by nearly 4% to £1,723 from October. The increase has been linked partly to higher wholesale energy costs resulting from geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

FTSE 100 Today: Key Stocks in Focus

BP and Shell were among the major losers as falling crude prices pressured the energy sector. Meanwhile, Antofagasta, Anglo American and Fresnillo gained more than 1%, providing some support to the index.  Entain and Persimmon were also in focus after FTSE Russell indicated that both companies are set to leave the FTSE 100 in its latest index reshuffle.

UK Stock Market Today: What Investors Should Watch

Investors are likely to closely monitor crude oil prices, developments around the Strait of Hormuz, Nvidia’s earnings and upcoming US inflation data. The FTSE 100’s recent rally has also pushed the index close to multi-week highs, making movements in heavyweight sectors particularly important for its next direction.
