US Stock Market Today: US equities were weighed down by increased Treasury yields, rising crude oil prices, rising tensions between US and Iran, and weakening semiconductors. The Nasdaq Composite index saw the biggest fall, declining 1.32% to 26,293.22, while the S&P 500 dropped 0.59% to 7,699.37 while on the other hand, the Dow Jones Industrial Average managed to weather the storm slightly better, dropping only 0.10% to 53,408.52.

This retreat comes amid a general retreat from record levels as Wall Street is now more concerned about whether valuations of costly technology stocks can survive an increase in borrowing costs and whether high energy prices can help sustain inflation. The Reuters news agency indicated that the 30-year Treasury rate had climbed to its highest point since 2007.

What Is Happening in the US Stock Market Today?

The trading on Tuesday is fueled by a tension arising from robust corporate results on the one hand and toughening macroeconomic factors on the other hand. The Dow has fared relatively better, thanks to the stability created by defensive and consumer stocks, but tech and semiconductors have been impacted negatively due to higher Treasury yields. The loss of 0.59% in S&P 500 Index also represents a further move away from its recent record high levels while Monday’s session had already seen the index fall 0.52% to 7,745.06.

Why Is US Stock Market Down Today?

  • Treasury yields are rising: The 30-year Treasury yield reached a level not seen since 2007, increasing pressure on equity valuations.
  • Oil prices are climbing: US crude moved above $85 a barrel as hopes for progress between Washington and Tehran faded.
  • Technology stocks are falling: Nvidia, AMD, Micron, Intel and other semiconductor names faced heavy selling.
  • AI valuations are under scrutiny: Investors are demanding stronger evidence that massive AI spending will translate into sustainable profits.
  • Fed uncertainty remains: Traders are reassessing the timing and direction of future monetary policy.
  • US-Canada trade tensions are adding risk: Washington and Ottawa are negotiating ahead of a threatened 50% tariff on $20 billion of Canadian goods.
  • Geopolitical risk has returned: Stalled US-Iran discussions have raised concerns about energy supplies and inflation.

US Stock Market Today: US-Canada Tariff Talks Intensify as Trump’s 50% Duties Face Midnight Deadline

The trade policy is yet another source of uncertainty. The US and Canada are discussing at the eleventh hour ahead of a 12:01 am deadline tomorrow. US President Donald Trump has warned of imposing a 50% tax on around $20 billion worth of Canadian goods should no agreement be reached.

As far as the market is concerned, the issue extends beyond Canada while higher taxes may make imports expensive and add to inflation. This adds one more reason for investors to be cautious, especially given the high bond yields.

US Stock Market Today: Fed Minutes in Focus as Traders Scale Back Bets on a September Rate Hike

Minutes from the Fed’s July meeting will be released Wednesday and might hint at the future direction of interest rates while market participants still see an interest rate hike by 25 basis points this year, but the chances of a rate increase in September seem to have diminished owing to weak inflation readings. The import is quite simple while in case there are indications that policymakers are worried about persistent inflation, Treasury yields may stay higher.

US Stock Market Today: Nvidia Results Loom as Investors Question AI Valuations After S&P 500 Retreat

The role of Nvidia in the ongoing AI controversy in the market cannot be overemphasized. According to the market data provided, Nvidia was down by 2.47% to $219.46 while the semiconductor group experienced significant losses, with Lam Research down by 6.24%, Applied Materials down by 5.41%, Micron down by 5.28%, and AMD down by 4.66%.

The Philadelphia semiconductor group also experienced substantial losses on Tuesday while earnings of Nvidia are thus expected to indicate whether investments in AI are justified in light of such high valuations of the sector.

US Stock Market Today: Fading US-Iran Peace Hopes Push Oil Higher as Treasury Yields Hit Multi-Year Highs

Geopolitical risk is feeding directly into financial markets while reuters reported that stalled US-Iran peace efforts pushed Brent crude higher and contributed to a renewed rise in Treasury yields. That creates an uncomfortable combination for Wall Street. Higher oil can increase inflation expectations, while higher yields raise the discount rate applied to future corporate earnings and growth stocks are especially sensitive to that shift.

US Stock Market Today: Oil Prices in Focus

Oil has become one of the market’s most important signals. US crude was listed at $85.38, up 1.04%, while Brent stood at $91.15. The rise matters because energy costs influence transportation, manufacturing and household spending. If oil remains elevated for an extended period, investors may become less confident that inflation will continue cooling. That could make the Federal Reserve’s policy decisions more complicated.

Nasdaq Composite 26,346.88 -298.00 (-1.12%)

Stocks opened lower, with the Nasdaq immediately leading the decline while at the opening bell, the Dow was down about 191 points according to live market coverage, before paring losses later in the session.

Caterpillar $851.26 -30.43 -3.45%
