What Is Happening in the US Stock Market Today?

The direct story is one of a relief rally by Friday, investors were looking at five consecutive down sessions where the price of oil had touched $100 and the yield on the 10-year Treasury was around 5%. The August inflation report did not offer an additional upside surprise and the headline CPI came in 0.4% higher than the prior month and 3.4% higher than a year ago. Core CPI posted gains of 0.3% month-on-month and 2.4% year-on-year.

Why Is US Stock Market Up Today?

The main reasons for today’s rally are:

  • Crude oil prices have pulled back, reducing immediate inflation pressure.
  • CPI broadly matched expectations, easing fears of a much hotter inflation surprise.
  • Stocks were oversold after four consecutive losing sessions, encouraging bargain hunting.
  • Technology shares are leading the rebound, lifting the Nasdaq.
  • Treasury yields have eased from their recent highs, improving the valuation backdrop for equities.
  • Investors are increasingly viewing a potential Fed hike as something the market has already partly priced in.

US Stock Market Today: Fed Rate Hike Bets Rise

However, paradoxical as it sounds, there has been an increase in expectations for the Federal rate hikes amid stock appreciation. According to Reuters, the probability for the interest-rate hike of 0.25 percent in the meeting held on September 15-16 was estimated at 85 percent. This figure has been even higher according to some estimates, standing at 90 percent. The message from the market is obvious as traders would rather have a clear hike than uncertain inflation.

US Stock Market Today: Nvidia Earnings In Focus

Nvidia continues to be one of the top stocks that will continue to matter to the overall market due to its huge significance in the artificial intelligence sector and the Nasdaq. However, Nvidia has experienced volatility lately. Nvidia stock was down more than 2% on Thursday due to weaker tech stocks. Given that semiconductors have remained significant in the artificial intelligence investing cycle, Nvidia’s revenue growth, demand from data centers and margins will continue to matter to the market.

US Stock Market Today: U.S. Crude Oil Crosses $100 Amid Middle East Tensions

Oil has emerged as one of the key reasons behind the volatility of Wall Street. The US benchmark crude oil has risen above $100 per barrel at some point in the week, while Brent oil rose to over $108, approaching $110 on the worries of the supply from the Middle East region however, on Friday, Brent crude oil fell by about 3%, while US oil dropped below $100.

US Stock Market Today: September Market Outlook

This month appears set to be a true test for stocks as far as their ability to stay overvalued even with inflation still above the 2% goal of the Fed. Both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq were down about 1.6% for the week up until Thursday, with the Dow off by roughly 2.5%, yet even after all the losses, all were still in the green for the year.

US Stock Market Today: Hotter CPI Data Sets Table for Federal Reserve Rate Hike Next Week

August CPI was a confusing indicator as year-on-year headline inflation increased by 3.4%, and year-on-year core CPI increased by 2.4%. The 0.3% monthly core CPI growth was higher than the consensus estimate of 0.2%. In other words, inflation has stayed above the 2% target set by the Fed and the markets now expect a 25-basis-points hike in September.

US Stock Market Today: Treasury Yields Hit Multi-Year Highs

Bond yields have now started serving as an indicator of caution for stock investors. The 10-year Treasury yield has touched the 5% mark in the Thursday session and has risen to levels near 4.95%, the highest level seen in several years. Rising yields may lead to higher interest rates which would make the bond more appealing than stocks.
