2026 Grammys: Chappell Roan once again became one of the most talked-about stars on the red carpet. The singer is famous for causing a buzz online with her bold and artistic fashion choices, especially at major events like the Grammy Awards. At the 2026 Grammy Awards held at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, Roan wore a custom creation by Mugler creative director Miguel Castro Freitas. The look included a negligee-style dress paired with a matching cape. Both pieces were made from silk georgette in a deep garnet red shade.

After she removed it, the design revealed a very daring look that gave the illusion of a “naked dress.” The light silk fabric appeared to hang from nipple rings, making the outfit dramatic and impossible to ignore.

The Paris-based Mugler label said the outfit was inspired by a piece from Manfred Thierry Mugler’s spring/summer 1998 collection. That earlier design was also considered controversial and used nipple rings as part of its structure. Miguel Castro Freitas reimagined the concept for the spring/summer 2026 season, blending Mugler’s historic boldness with a modern approach.

Eye-catching red carpet fashion is nothing new for Roan. At last year’s Grammy Awards, before she won the Best New Artist trophy, she appeared in a highly detailed, colorful look filled with prints that referenced famous artworks. Known for treating fashion as performance, she clearly aimed to make her Grammy red carpet debut unforgettable.
Unlike Bianca Censori’s widely discussed nearly nude outfit at the 2025 Grammys, Roan seemed to wear pasties under her Mugler dress. This added coverage while still maintaining the daring visual effect. The styling combined shock value with references to fashion history and artistic design.

Live television coverage had to quickly respond to Roan’s outfit choice. During her interview with E! red carpet hosts, she kept the cape on for extra coverage. However, when posing for photographers, she removed the cape, allowing the full design to be visible in photos.
Roan has built a reputation for standout Grammy looks. At the 2025 Grammys, she wore a Jean Paul Gaultier dress inspired by Edgar Degas’ ballerina paintings. Earlier this year, on January 29, she attended the premiere of Charli XCX’s film The Moment wearing a mint-green design by Paris-based label ILONA. That outfit followed a modern-meets-retro nurse theme.
Even though many news outlets described her Mugler look before the Grammy broadcast began, Roan had not shared details about it on her Instagram account, where she has 7.6 million followers, as of Sunday night. Later during the ceremony, she changed outfits before going on stage. She presented the Best New Artist award the same category she won in 2025 to Olivia Dean.
