The debate over celebrities, patriotism and political allegiance has spilled onto social media once again. This time, it’s actors Isha Koppikar and Kangana Ranaut who are at the centre of the conversation. Isha recently described herself as a “proud andhbhakt” and made it clear that her devotion is to India and not to any political party or leader. Her comments have now received strong backing from Kangana Ranaut, who said she could relate to her fellow actor’s views.
Isha Koppikar’s ‘Andhbhakt’ Remark
Isha addressed the label in a social media video after facing criticism and being called an “andhbhakt”. Instead of rejecting the term, she chose to reinterpret it. The actor added that if being devoted to one’s country and wanting to see it progress could be described as “bhakti”, she was comfortable accepting the label. She, however, drew a distinction between patriotism and political loyalty.
Isha highlighted that her “blind devotion” was not towards any political party. She said that her loyalty was towards the country and that loving India did not mean she would agree with every decision taken by the government.
Kangana Ranaut Comes Out In Support
Kangana Ranaut shared Isha Koppikar’s video on Instagram Stories and expressed her agreement with the actor’s stand. Kangana, who is a BJP MP, said she could relate to Isha’s sentiments. She cited many incidents from her own life that she said reflected her willingness to speak up against things she considered wrong.
Among the instances she recalled was an incident from her school days when she protested against a teacher for allegedly hitting children with a stick. She also referred to her reactions to the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and the Nirbhaya case.
Why The ‘Andhbhakt’ Label Is Controversial
The controversy largely revolves around the meaning attached to the word “andhbhakt”. In Indian political discourse, the term is generally used as a criticism of someone perceived to be an unquestioning or “blind” supporter of a political party, leader or ideology.
Isha Koppikar’s comments challenge that political usage and attempt to separate devotion to the nation from allegiance to a political establishment.
The Larger Debate: Can Celebrities Be Political?
Actors and other public figures possess enormous social-media reach, which means their political comments can quickly become part of a larger public debate. At the same time, celebrities who express strong political opinions often face scrutiny.
Isha’s statement attempts to make that distinction explicit. The actress said that loving the country and wanting its progress should not be automatically equated with unconditional support for a political party.
Kangana Ranaut’s intervention added another layer to the discussion due to her own political identity. Her support for Isha Koppikar placed the conversation at the intersection of Bollywood, nationalism and electoral politics.
