The music video for Ariana Grande’s latest song Hate That I Made You Love Me was released yesterday, providing the world with the first ever look at the new single that forms part of Grande’s Petal album set to come out on July 31. Although the chilling visual sparked quite some discussion because of its film-like quality and storytelling, it didn’t take long for everyone to start talking about Grande’s looks again. The almost five-minute-long video features not only Ariana but also Justin Long.

A Gothic Love Story Takes Center Stage

The music video centers on Long’s character dealing with the consequences of the loss of his loved one. At the same time, as the plot is being revealed, Grande is shown as a ghostly figure haunting him all through the video.

There was a certain scene that especially caught the public eye. In it, Grande is seen in a yellow dress with a deep neckline. It showcased how slim and fragile she is. Shortly after the release of the music video, various screenshots of this scene went viral on social media platforms.

Fans Share Mixed Reactions Online

The discussion soon took off on X, as fans provided varying views on the singer’s physique. As some people were lauding Grande for her performance and the artistic aspect of the video, other users felt worried about the singer’s slender physique. One fan said, “I’m sorry, but she just looks ill :/ (no shade) she’s beautiful and all that, but she looks very slim and you can see her bones.”

Many fans also stood up to defend the pop icon and urged people not to make any assumptions about her body based on how she looked. This discussion does not appear to be a first one for the Grammy award-winning singer, as her physique has been a matter of controversy recently.

In the course of the promotion of Wicked, Grande found herself often in the crosshairs of people’s discussions regarding her physical appearance. Previously, the singer had mentioned how difficult it was to live with such constant public scrutiny and comments about one’s body. In an episode of the web series Oui Oui Baguette, Grande joined her fellow co-star Cynthia Erivo and talked about her experience facing such criticism in her years of being in the industry.

“In my life in the public eye and having been a petri dish since 16 or 17, I’ve heard it all. I’ve heard every iteration of it of what is wrong with me. And then you fix it, and then it is wrong for a different reason. I’ve definitely been criticized like that, and it’s hard not to let it get into your head because it is something that is uncomfortable on any level.” Her statement garnered support among her fans, who have since advocated against body shaming and other form of appearance criticism.

New Album and Tour Ahead

Even with all of the discussion that has occurred online about the video, Grande continues to concentrate on entering into a new and exciting era of her music career. The song, Hate That I Made You Love Me, is actually the first single of the upcoming album titled Petal that has been eagerly awaited by many people since this summer. Not only has Grande released her new single, but she also plans to go on tour. Known as The Eternal Sunshine Tour, it is set to begin in Oakland, California on June 6, and will end in London on September 1.
