Rajkummar Rao’s upcoming courtroom drama Prahaar is not releasing in cinemas today, August 7, as originally announced. The makers had decided to postpone the release and are expected to announce a new date soon. The delay comes amid a packed release calendar with several big-ticket films already running in the theatres.
Why Has Prahaar Been Postponed?
According to a report by Bollywood Hungama few week ago, Maddock Films decided to push the release after discussions with stakeholders to give the film a better theatrical window.
A source told the publication at the time, “Prahaar was scheduled to arrive in cinemas on August 7. However, the makers have now decided to postpone its release. After discussions with the stakeholders, they felt that it would not be advisable to release the film during that period. Had it arrived on the scheduled date, it would have released a week after Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which arrives in cinemas on July 30, and a week before Batwara 1947 and Awarapan 2, both of which release on August 14. All three films appear promising. Meanwhile, Prahaar is a special film that requires a healthy window, as it has the potential to draw audiences in large numbers.”
Who Is Ujjwal Nikam?
Rajkummar portrays senior advocate Ujjwal Nikam, one of India’s most prominent Special Public Prosecutors. With a legal career spanning more than three decades, Nikam has represented the prosecution in several of the country’s most closely watched criminal and terror cases.
Ujjwal Nikam is best known for leading the prosecution in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks case against Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving terrorist captured after the attacks. The case remains one of the most significant terror trials in India’s history and eventually led to Kasab being sentenced to death and executed in 2012.
He also played a key role in prosecuting those accused in the 1993 Bombay serial blasts case, another landmark investigation that shaped India’s criminal justice history.
Over the years, Nikam has appeared in several other high-profile matters such as the Gulshan Kumar murder case, the Pramod Mahajan murder case, the 2013 Mumbai gang rape case and the Badlapur school sexual assault case.
In 2016, the Government of India honoured Ujjwal Nikam with the Padma Shri for his contribution to public service and the legal profession.
He entered politics during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections when BJP fielded him from the Mumbai North Central constituency. But he lost the election by a narrow margin.
In July 2025, he was nominated to the Rajya Sabha under the law category in recognition of his contribution to the country’s legal system.
