IMAX! IMAX! IMAX! If you have been scrolling through social media over the past few months, chances are you have come across the term more than once. Ever since it was revealed that Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has become the first feature film to be shot entirely using IMAX film cameras, the format has become just as big a talking point as the movie itself.

if you are still wondering what IMAX actually is and what makes it different from a regular movie theatre, here’s a simple breakdown before The Odyssey arrives in cinemas.

What Exactly Is IMAX?

IMAX is a premium cinema format designed to make movies look and sound more immersive than a standard theatre experience. While many people think IMAX simply means a larger screen, that is not it.

An IMAX theatre comes with a giant screen, crystal clear picture quality, advanced projection systems and powerful sound technology. Together, these elements are meant to make viewers feel as though they are inside the movie rather than just watching it.

In simple terms, IMAX is to a regular cinema what a front row concert experience is to listening to music through headphones.

How Is IMAX Different From A Regular Theatre?

The biggest difference is the screen. Normal cinema screens are wide but IMAX screens are much taller and larger. That means audiences get to see more of the image instead of having parts of it cropped.

Then comes the picture quality. IMAX projection delivers sharper visuals with greater detail which makes landscapes, action sequences and close up shots appear far more lifelike.

Sound is another major factor. IMAX theatres are equipped with custom designed audio systems that produce a more immersive surround sound experience.

Finally, there’s the seating arrangement. IMAX auditoriums are designed to give viewers a better viewing angle. This ensures the giant screen remains the focus no matter where they are seated.

Why Does Christopher Nolan Love IMAX So Much?

For years, the Oscar winning director has pushed the boundaries of large format filmmaking. He used IMAX cameras for films like The Dark Knight, Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet and the Academy Award winning Oppenheimer.

Nolan believes IMAX allows audiences to experience films the way they were meant to be seen.

Why Is The Odyssey Being Called An IMAX Milestone?

The Odyssey is the first major feature film shot entirely using IMAX film cameras. Previous Nolan films featured sequences shot in IMAX but The Odyssey is expected to maintain that large format visual experience throughout its runtime.

Should You Watch The Odyssey In IMAX?

If you are planning to watch The Odyssey, the answer is simple: yes. Unlike many films that only feature select scenes shot in IMAX, The Odyssey has been filmed entirely using IMAX film cameras. That means the movie has been designed to take full advantage of the format’s larger screen.

Of course, a standard cinema screening will still let you enjoy the story. But if you are looking to experience The Odyssey the way it was created to be seen, choosing an IMAX screen makes perfect sense.
