The music world has lost one of its most unforgettable voices. Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler, whose powerful vocals made songs like Total Eclipse Of The Heart and Holding Out For A Hero timeless classics, has died at the age of 75.
Her family announced the news through a statement shared on her official Facebook page: “Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for. In May, Tyler had undergone emergency intestinal surgery at a hospital near Faro, Portugal, where she lived. She was later put into an induced coma in an attempt to assist her recovery. She was then taken out of the coma, but a representative said she remained “very unwell and in intensive care.”
From Gaynor Hopkins To Bonnie Tyler
Long before she became an international music icon, Bonnie Tyler was born as Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, a village near Swansea in Wales. She grew up in a working-class household with five older siblings and often spoke proudly about her roots.
Before music became her full-time career, Tyler worked in a grocery shop while performing cover songs in local clubs during her free time. One of those performances changed everything after a talent scout noticed her singing and encouraged her to record a demo. It eventually earned her a record deal and with it came the stage name the world would come to know: Bonnie Tyler.
The Voice That Became Her Identity
Tyler’s distinctive raspy voice became one of her biggest strengths but it came after surgery to remove nodules from her vocal cords early in her career.
Instead of hurting her singing, the procedure gave her voice its unmistakable edge which helped her stand out from other artists of the era. That unique sound would go on to define some of pop and rock music’s biggest hits.
Songs That Defined An Era
Bonnie Tyler first found major success with It’s A Heartache but it was Total Eclipse Of The Heart that transformed her into a global superstar.
Released in 1983, the dramatic power ballad topped charts in multiple countries including UK and US, and remains one of the most recognisable love songs ever recorded. Decades later, it continues to feature in films, television shows, karaoke nights and social media trends.
She followed it up with another fan favourite, Holding Out For A Hero, which became a standout track from the Footloose soundtrack and cemented her place among the biggest voices of the 1980s.
A Career That Lasted Decades
Although Tyler’s popularity peaked during the 1980s, she never stopped making music. She continued releasing albums, touring across Europe and performing for audiences around the world.
Her career also included representing UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 with Believe In Me. Her final studio album, The Best Is Yet To Come, arrived in 2021. Even in recent years, she continued revisiting her classic hits, including a new version of Total Eclipse Of The Heart released with David Guetta and Hypaton in 2025.
Family
Tyler shared a long and stable marriage with property developer Robert Sullivan. The couple married in 1973 and remained together for more than five decades. They never had children.
