Cristina Sanz, one of the beloved stars of A&E’s Emmy-winning reality series Born This Way, has died at the age of 36 after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. The heartbreaking news was shared by her parents, Mariano and Beatriz, who revealed that Sanz collapsed while attending her day program and was rushed to the hospital.
In a statement posted on her official Instagram account, her family said doctors did everything they could to save her, but she did not survive.
“It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that our daughter, Cristina, passed away Monday morning,” the statement read.
Her parents also described her death as “a total shock and unexpected,” adding that they were grateful they could be by her side during her final moments.
Who Was Cristina Sanz?
Cristina Sanz was an American reality television personality who rose to fame through A&E’s Born This Way. Airing from 2015 to 2019, the documentary-style reality series followed the lives of seven young adults with Down syndrome.
Sanz appeared throughout all four seasons and became a fan favourite for her cheerful personality. The show was widely praised for challenging stereotypes and giving viewers an authentic look at the lives of people with Down syndrome.
Born This Way wasn’t just popular with viewers. The series also earned critical acclaim during its four-season run and went on to win three Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program.
Her Love Story Was Part Of The Series
One of the most memorable parts of Cristina’s journey on Born This Way was her relationship with Angel Callahan.
The couple’s wedding was featured in a 2018 episode which allowed viewers to celebrate the milestone alongside them. But their marriage later came to an end in 2021. According to reports, the pair attributed their separation to the challenges they faced during the COVID-19 pandemic and the extended lockdown period.
A Proud Family Heritage
According to her A&E biography, Cristina came from a family with Spanish roots and enjoyed preparing traditional Spanish dishes. Friends and family often described her as compassionate, thoughtful and someone who was always willing to lend a helping hand.
Her kindness and positive attitude made her one of the most admired members of the Born This Way cast.
Cristina’s final Instagram post came in December 2025 when she shared a photograph with her Born This Way castmates.
