She started with theatre and small television roles before appearing in Ireland’s first soap opera, Tolka Row, followed by Coronation Street. Her breakthrough on television came in 1986 when she starred as nurse Megan Roach in the BBC medical drama Casualty, a role she returned to several times over the next two decades.
Fricker’s defining career moment arrived in 1990 when she became the first Irish actress to win an Academy Award. She received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for portraying Bridget Fagan Brown, the devoted mother of Christy Brown, in My Left Foot, opposite Daniel Day-Lewis, who also won an Oscar for his performance.
