Stars from the realm of cinema have flocked to France as they are all set to take part in the 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. The poster of the event was revealed in the Palais des Festivals on May 11, 2026, thereby marking the commencement of one of the most prestigious events in the film industry.

After the poster unveiling event, the celebrations moved to Hotel Martinez, where the president of the jury, Park Chan-wook, held a dinner with the rest of the jury members before the opening of the festival. The respected director leads the team of 9 jurists for this year’s competition, which consists of Demi Moore, Ruth Negga, Laura Wandel, Chloé Zhao, Diego Céspedes, Isaach De Bankolé, Paul Laverty, and Stellan Skarsgård. The jury will be viewing and discussing 22 films during the duration of the competition.

Together, they will decide on the awarding of the most prestigious prizes at Cannes Film Festival, which include the Palme d’Or, Grand Prix, Jury Prize, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Actor awards. The winning nominees are expected to be declared during the closing ceremony slated for May 23.

This year’s film festival kicks off today with the world premiere of Pierre Salvadori’s new movie, La Vénus Électrique (The Electric Kiss), chosen to open the ceremony tonight. Tonight’s proceedings will be brought to a close with the awarding of Honorary Palme d’Or to the esteemed director, Peter Jackson. Notable personalities who attended the opening ceremony included actress Maika Monroe, actor Diego Luna, director Hirokazu Kore-eda, actress Jane Fonda, actress Dame Joan Collins, and actor Elijah Wood.

The actors starring in the movie are Pio Marmai, Gilles Lellouche, Anaïs Demoustier, and Gustave Kervern. The plot revolves around the subjects of bereavement, artistry, and fraud in the backdrop of the vibrant 1928 Paris. In the plot, the lead character is a young painter named Antoine Balestro. After losing his wife, he becomes disenchanted and drunk. He seeks to contact his deceased wife using the service of a psychic. At the venue, he meets Suzanne, a penniless carnival worker who joins the session secretly intending to steal some food. This marks the starting point of the unfolding events.

Apart from the movie shown at the Cannes festival, this year’s Cannes Film Festival is hosting other movies worth seeing on the first day of the show. Some of the highly anticipated films include Fatherland, whose cast consists of Sandra Hüller, as well as Gentle Monster, whose cast includes Léa Seydoux and Catherine Deneuve. One of the biggest premiers will be Paper Tiger, starring Adam Driver, Miles Teller, and Scarlett Johansson.

Garance, with Adèle Exarchopoulos, and Hope, featuring a cast including Michael Fassbender, Taylor Russell, Alicia Vikander, Hoyeon, and Hwang Jung-Min, are some other films set for release that could receive huge acclaim. One other notable film at the festival is Fjord, which stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve. Amarga Navidad and The Man I Love, directed by Pedro Almodóvar, featuring Rami Malek, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Rebecca Hall, and Tom Sturridge, are among the other top films to watch out for at the festival.
