Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has officially done what seemed almost impossible. The epic has overtaken Deadpool & Wolverine to become the highest-grossing R-rated Hollywood film of all time, with its worldwide box-office collection reaching a staggering $1.35 billion.

The Matt Damon-led film has now earned around $1.352 billion globally, including approximately $516 million in North America and more than $835 million from international markets. The achievement comes nearly six weeks into its theatrical run, showing just how strongly the film has continued to perform after its opening weekend.

The result is particularly impressive because The Odyssey did not rely on a record-breaking opening. Instead, Christopher Nolan’s latest has benefited from strong word of mouth, critical reception and sustained demand for premium large-format screenings, especially IMAX.

How Much Has The Odyssey Earned At The Box Office?

The Odyssey opened in theatres on July 17 and collected around $123.5 million domestically during its opening weekend. Since then, the film has continued to add to its worldwide total, eventually crossing the $1.35 billion mark. Its current haul includes roughly $516 million from North America and more than $835 million internationally.

The film’s performance has also been powered by premium formats. IMAX screenings alone have contributed approximately $354 million to its global box office, highlighting the importance of the format to Nolan’s latest spectacle.

Did The Odyssey Beat Deadpool & Wolverine At The Box Office?

Yes. The Odyssey has now surpassed Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine to claim the title of the highest-grossing R-rated film ever. Deadpool & Wolverine had previously held the worldwide record with around $1.338 billion. While the Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman-led Marvel film remains the record holder for the biggest opening weekend by an R-rated movie, The Odyssey has taken the overall lifetime box-office crown.

The difference between the two films’ theatrical runs is especially interesting. Deadpool & Wolverine exploded out of the gate, earning $444.7 million worldwide during its opening weekend, including $211.4 million in North America.

Why Is The Odyssey Performing So Well At The Box Office?

For starters, The Odyssey is a Christopher Nolan event movie, with audiences particularly interested in experiencing the director’s latest epic on the biggest screen possible. The nearly three-hour adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek poem has also benefited from strong word of mouth. Rather than disappearing after its opening weeks, the film has maintained enough audience interest to keep premium screenings in demand.

The film’s IMAX performance has been particularly striking. With approximately $354 million coming from IMAX, the format has become a major part of the movie’s overall theatrical success.

Is The Odyssey Christopher Nolan’s Highest-Grossing Movie?

It is. With its current worldwide haul of $1.352 billion, The Odyssey has surpassed The Dark Knight Rises, which earned around $1.08 billion globally. That makes The Odyssey the highest-grossing film of Nolan’s directing career.

It also places the film among the biggest releases of 2026, with only Spider-Man: Brand New Day currently ahead of it globally at approximately $2.039 billion.

What Did Ryan Reynolds Say About The Odyssey Breaking The Record?

Ryan Reynolds, whose Deadpool & Wolverine previously held the R-rated box-office record, congratulated Nolan and the team behind The Odyssey following the milestone. Sharing his reaction on X, Reynolds wrote, “Congratulations to the entire cast and crew of The Odyssey for becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. That is one helluva car.”

Who Stars In Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey?

The Odyssey features an enormous ensemble led by Matt Damon as Odysseus. The cast also includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and Lupita Nyong’o, among several other major stars.

Based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic, the film follows Odysseus and his dangerous journey home to Ithaca after the fall of Troy. Nolan has turned the ancient story into a large-scale theatrical spectacle, with the film shot using IMAX technology and designed to be experienced on premium screens.

Can The Odyssey Cross $1.5 Billion?

With The Odyssey already at approximately $1.352 billion worldwide, industry projections suggest the film could potentially cross the $1.5 billion milestone before its theatrical run ends. If it gets there, Nolan’s latest would move even further beyond the previous R-rated record and cement its position as one of the biggest blockbusters ever made.
