Tom Cruise is stepping into one of the strangest roles of his career and the final trailer for Digger makes it clear that this is nothing like the action-heavy characters audiences have come to associate with the superstar. Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, the upcoming film sees Cruise transform into the larger-than-life oil tycoon Digger Rockwell, complete with thinning grey hair, prosthetics, a noticeable belly and a broad accent.
Digger Final Trailer: Tom Cruise As Digger Rockwell
The trailer introduces Cruise’s Digger Rockwell as a man who appears very aware of how much people despise him. In one of the opening moments, he addresses the criticism surrounding his character, saying:
“I am not gonna sugarcoat it. We are in a tight spot. And do me a favour. Imagine that you’re one of those people that think that Digger Rockwell’s Satan himself. Now, what are some of the harshest attacks I can expect from those folks who think that I’m scum of the earth?”
That introduction immediately establishes the kind of character Cruise is playing enormously powerful, unapologetically wealthy and seemingly convinced that he is capable of fixing the very crisis he helped create.
What Is Digger About?
Digger follows Digger Rockwell, an immensely powerful oil tycoon whose actions have helped push the world towards a potentially devastating disaster.
Rather than simply accepting responsibility, Rockwell launches a frantic attempt to convince the world that he can actually be its saviour. The official synopsis describes the story as a mission by “the most powerful man in the world” to prove that he is humanity’s saviour before the disaster he has unleashed destroys everything.
The result appears to be a darkly comic and satirical take on power, wealth, environmental destruction and the kind of larger-than-life personality who believes that having enough influence also means having the answer to every problem.
Digger Cast
Alongside Tom Cruise, the film features an impressive ensemble cast. Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg and Jesse Plemons appear alongside Cruise, with Sophie Wilde, Emma D’Arcy, Robert John Burke and Burn Gorman also part of the cast.
The screenplay comes from Iñárritu, Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone and Sabina Berman, with the story credited to Iñárritu and Berman alongside Jez Butterworth. Behind the camera, Iñárritu reunites with Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, with the entire movie captured in VistaVision.
