Tom Cruise is stepping into unfamiliar territory with Digger and if the film’s first trailer is anything to go by, audiences are in for a very different side of the Hollywood star. Released by Warner Bros., the trailer introduces Cruise in a dramatic new avatar as billionaire Digger Rockwell, complete with a Southern accent, a pot belly and thinning white hair.
Digger marks Cruise’s first collaboration with Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu.
Digger Trailer: Tom Cruise’s Transformation Steals The Spotlight
The trailer wastes no time introducing Cruise’s unusual new character. Sporting a completely different look, he plays Digger Rockwell, described as “the most powerful man in the world” whose billion-dollar company finds itself at the centre of a global crisis.
The opening dialogue immediately sets the tone. “Everything changes. One day you’re a cat, or a king. Next day, you’re just ashes in a box,” Digger says.
Things take an unexpected turn when he learns that one of his products may have caused a glacier in Greenland to shift. Instead of panicking, Digger initially brushes off the concern.
“That glacier over there in Greenland shifts five feet. Now, this desk in front of me is bigger than five feet. My d*** is a tenth of that size. What? Do you want me to shut down a billion-dollar platform over something ten times the size of my d***?”
His priorities seem to lie elsewhere, particularly with his ageing white cat, whose remaining lifespan concerns him more than the unfolding crisis.
Digger Trailer: A Dark Comedy With High Stakes
While Digger leans heavily into comedy, the stakes couldn’t be higher. John Goodman plays an ailing US president who urges Digger to undo the damage before it escalates further.
“Digger got us all into this mess and Digger’s going to dig us out again,” Goodman declares after learning the crisis could cost trillions of dollars to fix.
As the trailer unfolds, large scale destruction hint that the situation is rapidly spinning out of control. Yet, Digger appears determined to reshape the narrative in his favour.
Near the end of the trailer, he says, “When all else fails, you hit ’em with the truth. You know the hard truth. Just bang bang bang.”
Digger: Cast And Release Date
Alongside Cruise, Digger features an ensemble cast including Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, Emma D’Arcy and John Goodman.
Produced by Legendary Pictures, the film marks Cruise’s first collaboration with Warner Bros. since signing a development and production deal with the studio in 2024.
Digger is directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and is scheduled to arrive in theatres on October 2.
