The Bahamas continues to mourn the devastating plane crash that claimed 10 lives, including five members of the popular Da Pond Band. Among those who also lost their life was Melvin Henfield, better known to fans and listeners as DJ Fresh.
According to reports, the Cessna aircraft crashed at around 1 PM local time on Friday, July 10 while travelling to San Andros. Members of Da Pond Band, were headed to perform at the 31st annual All-Andros and the Berry Island Regatta. DJ Fresh was also among the 10 people who died in the crash.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the Bahamian music community with tributes pouring in for the artists and entertainers who were onboard.
Who Was DJ Fresh?
Known professionally as DJ Fresh or DJ Fresh International, Melvin Henfield was one of the Bahamas’ most recognisable DJs and radio personalities. He spent years entertaining audiences through music while becoming a familiar voice to listeners across the country.
Henfield worked as a radio host with 100 JAMZ, one of the Bahamas’ leading radio stations where he built a loyal following. Whether he was behind the microphone or behind the DJ booth, he was known for bringing energy to every event he was part of.
Over the years, DJ Fresh performed at several major cultural celebrations, including the Bahamas Carnival, community festivals and local music showcases.
Away from the stage and radio studio, he was an ordained minister who remained deeply connected to his faith. Raised by Bishop Elton Major from the age of 13, Henfield balanced two very different worlds, one centred around music and public entertainment, and another rooted in ministry, spirituality and family.
At just 34 years old, Melvin Henfield had already established himself as one of the Bahamas’ best-known DJs and radio personalities.
Tributes Continue To Pour In
As news of the tragedy spread, the Bahamas Musicians & Entertainers Union remembered both the members of Da Pond Band and DJ Fresh y honouring the impact they had on the country’s cultural landscape.
In its tribute, the union praised the late musicians, “whose passion, dedication, and artistry touched so many lived and helped to enrich the cultural fabric of The Bahamas,” while also remembering DJ Fresh for his contributions to the local entertainment scene.
