As fans wait to see The Odyssey, Anne Hathaway has shared a hilarious behind the scenes story from the beginning of her long-standing collaboration with director Christopher Nolan. Long before the duo reunited for the upcoming epic, Hathaway walked into a meeting with Nolan convinced she was about to audition for an entirely different DC character.

Looking back on the moment during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor revealed she had spent an entire week preparing herself to become Harley Quinn. There was just one problem. Nolan wasn’t casting Harley Quinn at all.

Anne Hathaway Was Convinced She Was Meeting For Harley Quinn

Recalling the audition process, Hathaway said she knew she was being considered for the female lead in Nolan’s next Batman film but she ruled out Catwoman almost immediately.

“Here’s the thing that worked in my favor: she’s a chameleon,” Hathaway said.

“So, I knew I was auditioning for… I was meeting with Chris for the female role in the Batman trilogy, the next installment. I thought that I’d gamed it out, because I was just like, ‘It can’t be Catwoman because Michelle Pfeiffer was so iconic… It’s going to be Harley Quinn!'”

Believing she had figured out the mystery, Hathaway said she fully embraced what she imagined Harley Quinn’s energy would be before walking into the meeting.

A Two-Hour Meeting Changed Everything

The actor revealed she spent days creating what she described as a “demonic Harley Quinn energy.”

“So, I spent a week developing demonic Harley Quinn energy. I was wearing weird jester flats and a striped top,” she recalled.

Everything changed nearly two hours into her conversation with Nolan.

“And then, about two hours into our conversation, Chris is like, ‘So, the part’s Catwoman,’ and I was like, ‘Transform!’ So, I just then decided that I was like, ‘Well, this top is very sensual.’ And I was going to be very… like a psychopath. I changed personalities like a psychopath.”

The last minute switch worked in Hathaway’s favour as she eventually landed the role of Selina Kyle, better known as Catwoman, in The Dark Knight Rises.

A Partnership That Continued Beyond Batman

The Dark Knight Rises marked Hathaway’s first collaboration with Nolan but it wasn’t their last. The pair later reunited for Interstellar, where Hathaway played NASA scientist Dr. Amelia Brand. They are now working together again on The Odyssey, which is scheduled to arrive in theatres on July 17.
