Shailene Woodley has finally won her first Emmy Award. She took home the Guest Actress in a Drama Series trophy at the 2026 Emmy Awards for her performance in Hulu’s Paradise. The win came during Night 2 of the ceremony and marked a major milestone in Woodley’s career. This comes nearly a decade after her first Emmy nomination.
Her winning performance came in the second season of Dan Fogelman’s post-apocalyptic drama where she played Annie Clay, a survivor whose storyline eventually takes an especially devastating turn.
Shailene Woodley Wins First Emmy For Paradise
Woodley was recognised in the Guest Actress in a Drama Series category at the 2026 Emmy Awards. This was her second Emmy nomination overall, following her 2017 nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for HBO’s Big Little Lies.
Accepting the award, Woodley thanked her mother and reflected on the unusual nature of working in the entertainment industry.
“Mom, this is so cool,” she said on stage. “I just feel so lucky to do what we do and to be a part of the circus with all of you amazing traveling storytelling clowns.”
The win also gives Paradise its first Emmy Award, with the series receiving seven nominations this year, an increase from its four nominations for Season 1. The show is competing in the Outstanding Drama Series category as well.
What Did Shailene Woodley Say About Her Paradise Character?
Woodley’s Annie is not simply a conventional survivor. Her character is defined by her ability to think ahead, remain patient and withstand circumstances that would break many others.
Speaking backstage after her win, Woodley explained what she admired about Annie and the qualities she believes she will carry with her even after leaving the character behind.
“Annie is very calculated, and she’s very patient in her decisions, and that’s something that I have learned from and something that I’ve definitely take with me as I’ve moved forward away from her,” she said as quoted by Deadline.
“I also really admire her resiliency, and that her resiliency comes from an internal place, not from a place of needing gratification, from an external perspective, and I think that’s a very rare and beautiful quality to have as a person.”
Where To Watch Paradise In India?
Paradise is a Hulu Original in the US. For viewers in India, the series is available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar.
What Is Paradise About?
Created by Dan Fogelman, Paradise takes place in a highly advanced underground community built after a catastrophic climate disaster changes life on Earth. The bunker is designed to shelter around 25,000 people and presents itself as a secure, carefully controlled refuge from the destruction outside.
But the apparent safety of this isolated society is shattered when the President of the United States, Cal Bradford, is found dead inside his private quarters.
The murder sets off an investigation led by Secret Service agent Xavier Collins who soon discovers that the community’s perfect appearance hides a far more complicated reality.
What Happens In Paradise Season 2?
While the first season largely centres on the murder investigation and the secrets buried inside the bunker, Season 2 expands the story beyond its walls.
The new season explores the dangerous world outside the protected community, introducing survivors and factions living in the post-apocalyptic wasteland. As the characters encounter this unfamiliar environment, they are also forced to confront deeper questions surrounding the bunker, its origins and the reasons behind its creation.
This is where Woodley’s Annie becomes an important part of the story, bringing an outsider’s perspective to the increasingly complicated world of Paradise.
Who Is In The Paradise Cast?
The series stars Sterling K. Brown as Xavier Collins, the Secret Service agent at the centre of the murder investigation; James Marsden as President Cal Bradford; Julianne Nicholson as Samantha “Sinatra” Redmond, the powerful figure behind the bunker; Thomas Doherty as Link, who leads an outsider biker group; and Sarah Shahi as Dr. Gabriela Torabi, a therapist with knowledge of the community’s mysterious beginnings.
Shailene Woodley plays Annie Clay, a fiercely independent survivor whose story becomes central to Season 2.
