Widow’s Bay had a huge night at the 2026 Emmy Awards by turning its first season into a record-breaking run. The Apple TV show finished the awards season with 14 wins and set a new single-season record for a comedy series. It won the top comedy prize along with several major acting, writing and directing honours.
The show had already picked up eight Emmys at an earlier ceremony before returning for the main awards night on Monday. It then won in all six of the categories in which it was nominated that evening. This makes Widow’s Bay one of the biggest stories of the 78th Emmy Awards.
Emmy Awards 2026: Widow’s Bay Wins Best Comedy Series
The biggest win came in the Outstanding Comedy Series category where Widow’s Bay took the top prize. The victory also helped the show break the previous comedy record set by The Studio which had won 13 awards in a single season.
Created by Katie Dippold, Widow’s Bay is the first-season story of a New England island community dealing with a centuries-old curse. Matthew Rhys plays the town’s mayor, with the series bringing comedy and horror together.
While accepting the best comedy award, Dippold thanked Apple for giving the team the freedom to make the show they wanted.
“Thank you, Apple, for letting us take this crazy, creative swing. They truly just let us do this weird show.”
Emmy Awards 2026: Matthew Rhys Makes Emmy History
Matthew Rhys had an especially memorable night. He won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Widow’s Bay.
Rhys also won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for The Beast in Me. That made him the first man to win two leading actor categories in the same year.
He also received one of Widow’s Bay’s comedy series trophies as an executive producer. This takes his personal total to three Emmy wins.
Speaking backstage while holding two of his trophies, Rhys said: “The celebrations will be long, varied, and I hope at times wild.”
Emmy Awards 2026: Stephen Root Wins His First Emmy
The show’s success continued in the supporting actor category with Stephen Root winning Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Widow’s Bay.
It marked the veteran character actor’s first Emmy win. Root defeated a field that included Harrison Ford, who had been considered a strong contender for his role in Shrinking.
During his acceptance speech, Root addressed Ford directly, saying: “Thank you, sir, for all your many years of great, great, great acting.”
At 74, Root also became the oldest person to win the category.
Emmy Awards 2026: Kate O’Flynn Also Takes Her First Emmy
Kate O’Flynn won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Patricia Moyer in Widow’s Bay. The win was also her first Emmy. The 40-year-old British actor had previously been known largely for her theatre work before taking on the role in the series.
O’Flynn plays Patricia, a city worker and social outcast who is dealing with the demonic darkness surrounding the story.
Emmy Awards 2026: Katie Dippold Wins For Writing
Dippold added another major honour to Widow’s Bay’s haul by winning Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for the episode “Welcome to Widow’s Bay!”
The award was particularly significant for Dippold as it was her first Emmy win as well as her first Emmy nomination.
Before Widow’s Bay, Dippold was also known for a viral post showing herself dressed as The Babadook. Looking back at that moment after the ceremony, she said: “When I was sitting there in that costume, I did not think that this moment would happen.”
Emmy Awards 2026: Hiro Murai Wins For Directing
Widow’s Bay also won Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series with Hiro Murai taking the award for “Welcome to Widow’s Bay!”
