Fifteen years after Vikram Bhatt’s film Haunted 3D brought Indians the concept of the first horror film to be shot in stereoscopic 3D, the franchise makes a comeback with Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past in 2026. In an attempt to breathe life into the previously beloved supernatural world, the new film sees Mahaakshay (Mimoh) Chakraborty returning along with Chetna Pande, an actress making her debut.
Although Haunted 3D has opened well at the box office with respectable occupancy rates for its opening day, comments made by film fans on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, reveal how much they disagree about what the sequel has done to the franchise.
Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past X Review
The big screen debut of the movie had created quite some buzz on the Internet with celebrities of TV and reality shows like Elvish Yadav, Shiv Thakare, Priyanka Chahar Choudhary, and Eisha Singh attending the event, their pictures, and videos creating much noise on social media before viewers could post their reactions.
However, soon after viewing, people started posting negative reactions regarding the reliance on AI-created visuals and the use of virtual production methods as opposed to practical locations and tangible sets.
X user stated, “All shots that lack real actors in #HauntedEchoesOfThePast are all made entirely by AI (very low resolution). Those that do feature real actors were done using the green screen technique with the AI-made backgrounds. The 3D is done through AI (the image was inverted, hence the reversed lenses).”
A number of people mentioned that the supernatural scenes had an unintentionally comedic effect because jokes about ghosts failing at doing basic tasks despite having powerful abilities kept recurring, with most of them arguing that the movie did more laughing than scaring.

Critical Analysis: Nostalgia with a Dash of Overused Formula
Haunted 3D received acclaim in 2011 due to its storytelling ability, the gothic style setting, and being the pioneer in the 3D format of movies in Indian Cinema. Sadly, many critics seem disappointed in the lack of innovation in Echoes of the Past.
What Works
Effective Jump Scares in Beginning
As a source of basic thrills for fans of classic horror films, the movie provides some effective jump scares. It takes time to establish the right mood and creepy atmosphere before the story gets predictable.
Effort Put In by Actors
Although the script might not have been perfect, it is worth noting the effort that actors put in their performances. Pande brings sincere acting skills to the character of the heroine who is afraid of everything. The comeback of Mimoh Chakraborty is something the old fans should appreciate.

Excessive Use of Visual Effects
The excessive use of visual effects is probably one of the biggest flaws of the film. Most people think that the movie relies too much on artificial environments created through green screens and AI. There were no locations that could help the audience get the gothic environment they expect from a horror movie.
Overuse of Horror Movie Tropes
The movie includes many common horror movie tropes like door squeaking, flickering lights, and musical stings. Predictable as these elements are, they do not cause fear anymore but rather bring some unexpected laughs to the viewing audience.
Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past can be said to be a movie which tries to balance itself between nostalgia and contemporary trends of making movies. Even though it does not bring anything revolutionary to the table and revolutionize the horror genre as some viewers had expected, it certainly provides enough jump-out-of-your seat moments along with other elements that will keep horror movie buffs satisfied.
While those who wish to witness a movie that will revolutionize their views about horror movies may be disappointed, viewers seeking a fun way to spend their weekend watching something which is a part of Vikram Bhatt’s haunted series are sure to find satisfaction.
