Hollywood is mourning the death of actress Hayden Panettiere, who passed away at the age of 36. Best known for her roles in the television series Heroes and Nashville, Panettiere had been part of the entertainment industry for more than three decades.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her and to the millions who watched her onscreen,” her father, Skip Panettiere, said in a statement, according to reports.
The circumstances surrounding her death have not been disclosed, while her family has requested privacy.
Who Was Hayden Panettiere? Heroes Actor Who Started Acting As A Child
Panettiere’s association with showbiz began when she was still an infant. She appeared in a commercial for a toy brand at just 11 months old before moving into television at the age of four. She was cast in the American soap opera One Life To Live which marked the beginning of a career that would eventually span television, films, animation and music.
She later appeared in Guiding Light where her performance as a young character battling leukemia brought her greater recognition. Her early years in television gave Panettiere experience in front of the camera long before she reached her teenage years.
Her Early Film And Voice Acting Roles
While television remained an important part of her career, Panettiere also moved into films at a young age. In 1998, she voiced Princess Dot in Pixar’s animated film A Bug’s Life. The performance earned her a Grammy nomination in the Best-Spoken Word Album for Children category. This made her one of the youngest nominees at the time.
She went on to appear in Remember the Titans in 2000 and shared the screen with Denzel Washington. Her other film credits during the 2000s included Raising Helen, Tiger Cruise, Ice Princess and Bring It On: All or Nothing.
Heroes Made Hayden Panettiere A Household Name
Panettiere’s biggest television breakthrough came in 2006 when she joined NBC’s science fiction drama Heroes. She played Claire Bennet, a high school cheerleader who discovers that she has the ability to regenerate after suffering injuries.
Panettiere was just 16 when the show premiered. Claire became one of the most recognisable characters in the series with her storyline closely connected to the show’s famous phrase, “Save the cheerleader, save the world.” Heroes ran from 2006 to 2010 and established Panettiere as one of the prominent young stars on American television.
Nashville Showcased Her Acting And Singing
After Heroes, Panettiere took on another major television role in the musical drama Nashville. She played Juliette Barnes, a young and ambitious country music performer navigating fame, relationships and personal struggles.
The role allowed Panettiere to combine acting with singing. Her performance also earned her two Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress, in 2013 and 2014. The character’s storyline explored several difficult subjects, including addiction and postpartum depression, giving Panettiere some of her most demanding material as an actor.
Her Connection To The Scream Franchise
Panettiere also became part of the popular Scream franchise. She appeared as Kirby Reed in Scream 4 in 2011. More than a decade later, she returned to the role in Scream VI, released in 2023.
Her other film appearances included the romantic comedy I Love You, Beth Cooper, adding to a filmography that had already covered family movies, drama, comedy and horror.
Hayden Panettiere Spoke About Her Struggles
As an adult, Panettiere became increasingly open about the difficulties she had faced while growing up in the entertainment industry. She spoke about the pressures of becoming a successful actor at a very young age, as well as her experiences with addiction and recovery.
Following the birth of her daughter Kaya in 2014, Panettiere discussed her experience with postpartum depression. She later sought treatment for substance use and spoke publicly about her recovery. The Loss Of Her Younger Brother
Panettiere also experienced a major personal loss when her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, died in 2023 at the age of 28. Jansen had also worked as an actor and had begun appearing on television as a child.
In an interview following his death, Hayden spoke about the impact of losing her only sibling. She described herself as his older sister who had always felt responsible for protecting him, and said his death had a profound effect on her life.
Panettiere’s work extended beyond acting. She was also a singer and an activist and served as a spokesperson for the Whaleman Foundation, an organisation focused on ocean conservation.
