Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 4 and George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood.

House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 4 gave fans plenty to process but one moment has become the biggest talking point. After escaping captivity with Larys Strong, Aegon returns to the site of the devastating Battle of Rook’s Rest and comes face to face with Sunfyre.

At first glance, the dragon appears lifeless which makes many viewers believe the worst after Sunfyre’s horrific injuries in Season 2. But the episode drops a few clues that suggest the story may not be over just yet.

So, is Sunfyre really dead? Episode 4 gives us enough reasons to believe the dragon may still have a future.

House Of The Dragon Season 3 Episode 4: Aegon Doesn’t Behave Like Someone Saying Goodbye

The biggest hints comes from Aegon himself. The moment he reaches Sunfyre, he insists the dragon is still alive. On the surface, it could simply look like a grieving rider refusing to accept reality. But considering the bond that exists between Targaryens and their dragons, there is another way to read the scene.

Throughout George R.R. Martin’s world, dragons aren’t treated like ordinary creatures. Their connection with their riders goes far beyond loyalty, often feeling almost instinctive. If anyone could sense whether Sunfyre is still clinging to life, it would be Aegon.

Instead of portraying a king overwhelmed by denial, the scene feels as though Aegon genuinely believes there is still life left in his dragon. Unfortunately, he doesn’t get much time to process the moment as Larys urges him to leave before they are discovered.

Before walking away, Aegon takes one of Sunfyre’s golden scales.

Episode 4 also gives viewers an interesting clue. Later, Aegon and Larys pass through Rook’s Rest where Meleys’ remains can be seen after the battle. Unlike Sunfyre, Meleys looks indubitably dead. Her body has already begun decomposing.

Sunfyre doesn’t appear to be in the same condition.

Despite suffering catastrophic injuries during the battle, the dragon doesn’t show the same signs of decay. Since both dragons were wounded on the very same day, the difference feels a bit intentional.

House Of The Dragon Season 3 Episode 4: What Does Fire & Blood Say About Sunfyre?

In the book, Sunfyre does not die after the Battle of Rook’s Rest. Although the dragon is left gravely injured and separated from Aegon for a long period, the pair eventually reunite as the Dance of the Dragons reaches its final stages.

That reunion isn’t just a happy moment between rider and dragon. It goes on to shape one of the most devastating scenes in the entire story.

After Aegon eventually takes control of Dragonstone, Rhaenyra returns to reclaim her seat only to find herself captured. Then takes place one of the most shocking moments in Fire & Blood. On Aegon’s orders, Sunfyre burns and devours Rhaenyra which brings the Blacks’ queen to a gruesome end in front of her son, Aegon the Younger.

It’s one of the defining moments of the Dance of the Dragons and it’s hard to imagine the HBO series removing such a major event altogether.

Of course, House of the Dragon has never followed the books scene for scene and the writers have already introduced several notable changes. Even so, Sunfyre’s role in Rhaenyra’s fate is such an important part of the book that many fans believe the dragon still has an important journey ahead.
