Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major events from the House Of The Dragon Season 3 finale.
The Dance of the Dragons may have reached another bloody pause but fans are not quite done with Westeros yet. House Of The Dragon Season 3 has wrapped up after eight episodes and while viewers now have to wait for the show’s final season, HBO and Warner Bros. are giving them something to dig into in the meantime.
The complete third season is now available digitally while a physical release is scheduled for December. The big attraction for hardcore fans is not simply getting all eight episodes. The new release will also feature extended episodes of The House That Dragons Built, along with behind-the-scenes material featuring the cast, directors and producers.
So, what exactly is coming and where did Season 3 leave the Targaryens?
What Is The Extended Version Of House Of The Dragon Season 3?
Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment has announced House Of The Dragon: The Complete Third Season across 4K UHD Steelbook, 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD with the physical editions arriving on December 1, 2026.
The set includes all eight episodes of Season 3 but fans will also get extended versions of The House That Dragons Built, the behind-the-scenes series that accompanies the show.
The original behind-the-scenes episodes available on HBO Max generally run for around 20 minutes. The extended editions promise additional footage from the production which will give viewers a longer look at how the season was put together.
The extended editions will include more footage from that production material. Alongside the behind-the-scenes episodes, the collection will also contain featurettes that will involve the cast, directors and producers.
That means fans can expect more insight into the making of Season 3 rather than simply getting the same eight episodes packaged together.
What Happened In The House Of The Dragon Season 3 Finale?
Before getting into what’s next, the Season 3 ending left Westeros in an even bigger mess.
The finale centred on the Battle of Tumbleton where the situation descended into chaos which is expected by now. Ulf the White, riding Silverwing, became one of the biggest wild cards of the battle. Instead of behaving like a dependable weapon for either side, Ulf unleashed destruction that affected both the Blacks and Greens.
The attack resulted in the deaths of major figures including Lord Ormund Hightower and Ser Roderick Dustin while Tumbleton itself was left devastated.
Elsewhere, the finale delivered another major blow when Helaena Targaryen died by suicide after the pressure of the war and her captivity became unbearable.
The episode also pushed the conflict between Aegon and Aemond further. Aegon, now determined to reclaim his position, confronts his brother. Meanwhile, Rhaenyra becomes increasingly ruthless in her attempt to secure the Iron Throne.
By the time the credits rolled, neither side had truly won. Instead, the finale left several storylines hanging and set up the final stage of the Dance.
When Will House Of The Dragon Season 4 Release?
Fans will have to wait longer for the actual continuation of the story. HBO has not yet announced an exact premiere date for Season 4 but the final season is currently slated for 2028. Showrunner Ryan Condal has said that production is intended to begin in spring 2027.
Season 4 will also be the show’s last. Condal has confirmed that House Of The Dragon will conclude with its fourth season which will HBO’s adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood and the Dance of the Dragons to an end.
