The Targaryens may have spent much of House of the Dragon Season 3 fighting over the Iron Throne, but honestly, the dragons continued to steal the show. From brutal battles and unexpected dragon bonds to long awaited introductions and some truly terrifying displays of firepower, the season gave fans plenty to talk about.
The Season 3 finale takes the chaos up another notch with Ulf the White and Silverwing unleashing destruction at Tumbleton while the war between the Blacks and Greens continues to spiral.
But the finale is only the latest chapter in a season packed with memorable dragon moments. Here are some of the biggest ones from Season 3.
How Did Rhaena Targaryen Claim Sheepstealer?
Rhaena Targaryen finally got the dragon she had been chasing for so long. After spending considerable time tracking the wild and unpredictable Sheepstealer through the Vale, she succeeds in claiming the muddy brown dragon.
For Rhaena, the moment represents a major turning point. She had spent years wanting a dragon of her own and finally forming a bond with Sheepstealer gives her a much bigger role in the growing conflict.
What Happened To Vermax And Jacaerys Velaryon?
One of the most heartbreaking dragon moments of Season 3 comes during the Battle of the Gullet and Rhaena Targaryen and Sheepstealer are at the centre of the chaos. After finally claiming the wild dragon, Rhaena brings Sheepstealer into the battle. But the dragon is still difficult to control and cannot properly distinguish between friend and enemy.
As Sheepstealer causes chaos among the dragons, Jacaerys Velaryon, riding Vermax, tries to intervene. Baela also joins the fight on Moondancer as the situation spirals out of control. Rhaena struggles to control Sheepstealer which leaves Jace to deal with the fallout.
Amid the confusion, Vermax gets dangerously close to the Triarchy fleet. A massive grappling hook catches the dragon between his scales and badly injures him. Vermax loses control and crashes into the sea while Jace manages to free himself from the saddle.
Jace reaches the water but is then targeted by Myrish crossbowmen which leads to his death.
How Did Vhagar Destroy Harrenhal?
If there was one dragon that continued to make everyone on screen look absolutely tiny, it was Vhagar. Aemond Targaryen’s ancient mount made a terrifying appearance at Harrenhal in Episode 2.
Vhagar emerges from the fog surrounding the ruined castle with the enormous creature making Harrenhal’s towers look almost miniature. As she approaches, she unleashes a devastating wave of dragonfire.

The attack allows Aemond to seize control of Harrenhal and leads to a tense confrontation with Ser Simon Strong. Vhagar later disappears from Harrenhal while Aemond remains away from the stronghold as he deals with the aftermath of the events there.
Dreamfyre Finally Makes An Appearance
After being talked about for so long, Dreamfyre finally got her proper moment in Season 3. Helaena Targaryen’s bond with the dragon has always been an important part of her character but the show had kept Dreamfyre largely out of sight. That finally changed in Episode 7, when viewers got to see Helaena riding the stunning dragon during one of her visions.
What Happened When Four Dragons Faced Each Other?
Episode 7 delivered one of House of the Dragon Season 3’s biggest dragon spectacles when Rhaenyra finally discovers that Rhaena is the rider of Sheepstealer. The revelation comes after Rhaenyra has been trying to uncover the identity of the mysterious rider behind the wild dragon.
Rhaena has not exactly managed to tame Sheepstealer. The dragon remains wild and unpredictable and that becomes painfully obvious when Rhaenyra arrives with Syrax, accompanied by Addam Velaryon on Seasmoke. Daemon is already there with Caraxes as he tracked down Rhaena and warned her to stay hidden.

Things go completely off the rails when Syrax attacks Sheepstealer. Seasmoke and Caraxes end up turning on the wild dragon as well which creates a terrifying four-dragon confrontation. Rhaena watches helplessly as the other dragons bite and claw at Sheepstealer.
Eventually, Daemon asks Addam to get Rhaenyra and Rhaena away while he stays behind with Caraxes. The fight leaves Sheepstealer badly wounded and unable to fly but he is not shown being killed. Instead, the injured dragon crawls away.
How Did Sunfyre Return?
Aegon II and Sunfyre’s relationship also received a major moment in Season 3. After suffering horrific injuries in the previous season, the golden dragon makes an unexpected return when Aegon finds himself cornered.
Rather than abandoning his rider, Sunfyre protects him. The surprise appearance is especially significant because it shows that the connection between Aegon and his dragon has survived the trauma they both endured.
Who Is Tessarion And Why Is She Important?
Season 3 also brought Tessarion, the striking blue dragon belonging to Daeron Targaryen, into the story.
At Tumbleton, Daeron desperately works to free Tessarion from a sept so she can enter the battle. Once released, the blue dragon takes to the skies which gives the Greens another formidable force against the Blacks.

Why Did Ulf The White And Silverwing Attack Tumbleton?
The Season 3 finale delivers one of the biggest dragon moments when Ulf the White takes Silverwing into battle at Tumbleton.
After being humiliated by Daemon and pushed further by Ormund Hightower, Ulf takes to the skies in a drunken and furious state. Instead of carefully choosing a side, he unleashes Silverwing against the forces around Tumbleton.

The result is complete chaos. Silverwing’s attack destroys soldiers and burns major figures including Ser Roderick Dustin and Lord Ormund Hightower.
