Carol Vorderman has shared the reason behind her absence from social media where she revealed how a simple walk near her home ended up as a frightening medical emergency. The former Countdown presenter said she was knocked unconscious after tripping over a tree root and later found herself back in hospital after her condition suddenly worsened.
Weeks after the accident, she was still battling severe dizziness before finally finding a treatment that worked.
Sharing the update on Instagram, Carol wrote, “I’ve got a bit of a story to tell you about my concussion, which might also explain why I was a bit offline in June.”
She then recalled the moment everything changed, saying, “I tripped over a tree root, which I didn’t see, and I went smash onto the tarmac path. I was unconscious.”
Carol Vorderman Was Hospitalised Twice After The Fall
Carol revealed that she has no memory of what happened immediately after the accident but was taken by ambulance to Bristol Royal Infirmary. Looking back, she even found a moment of humour in the frightening experience after her son Cam told her that “The Final Countdown” was playing during the ambulance ride.
Although she was discharged the following day, her recovery took an unexpected turn.
“I had massive vomiting… all the bad signs,” she said while explaining that she had to return to hospital almost immediately. Doctors carried out CT scans and further checks before allowing her to go home again.
The television presenter also revealed that nearly half of her face was left covered in bruises and a black eye. Joking about her appearance, she wrote in her Instagram caption that it was “that’s why I wasn’t doing reels in June!!!”
The Dizziness Continued For Weeks
Even after the bruising began to heal, Carol realised something still wasn’t right. Around two to three weeks later, she continued to experience intense dizziness that affected her balance throughout the day.
Describing the feeling, she said, “It felt as though I was walking on a moving ship,” adding that she often felt as though the room was spinning around her.
Determined to find an answer, Carol visited Blue Sky Sports Physio near Bristol Harbour where physiotherapist Sophie carried out several tests and believed she was suffering from benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), an inner ear condition that can sometimes develop after a head injury.
How The Epley Technique Helped
To treat the condition, Sophie used the Epley Technique, a series of carefully controlled head movements designed to reposition tiny crystals in the inner ear.
Carol admitted the procedure initially felt overwhelming. “OMG it felt like I was falling off the edge of the earth!!!!” she wrote.
But the results were almost immediate. “After one session 95% of the dizziness went,” Carol revealed. She completed three physiotherapy sessions before finally being discharged.
Thanking her physiotherapist, she added, “All I can say is THANK YOU SOPHIE, YOU’RE AMAZING xx.”
