With Independence Day just around the corner, August 15 is the perfect time to revisit some of the films that have brought stories of courage, sacrifice and India’s freedom struggle to the screen. From Captain Vikram Batra’s journey in Shershaah and Sardar Udham Singh’s fight against colonial injustice to the undercover mission in Raazi, Prime Video has several options for a patriotic movie marathon.
If you are planning to stay in and watch something meaningful this Independence Day, here are six films worth adding to your list.
Shershaah
Sidharth Malhotra’s Shershaah tells the story of Captain Vikram Batra, the Param Vir Chakra awardee who fought during the 1999 Kargil War. The film also explores his relationship with Dimple Cheema, portrayed by Kiara Advani.
Sidharth plays both Vikram and his twin brother Vishal. Along with the intense combat sequences, the film’s emotional storyline and popular soundtrack add to its appeal.
Sardar Udham
Vicky Kaushal stars as revolutionary Sardar Udham Singh in Shoojit Sircar’s historical drama. The story follows Udham after he witnesses the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and spends years carrying the memory of the tragedy with him.
The film eventually takes him to London where he assassinates Michael O’Dwyer in 1940. Instead of turning the story into a conventional action film, Sardar Udham focuses on the psychological impact of violence and colonial rule. The Jallianwala Bagh sequence remains one of its most powerful portions.
Raazi
Alia Bhatt plays Sehmat in Meghna Gulzar’s Raazi, a spy thriller set around the period leading up to the 1971 India Pakistan War. Sehmat is recruited by RAW and marries into a Pakistani military family so she can secretly pass important information to India.
The film focuses on the fear and emotional pressure behind her mission. Alia’s performance captures Sehmat’s isolation as her personal life becomes inseparable from her secret assignment.
Ae Watan Mere Watan
Sara Ali Khan stars in Ae Watan Mere Watan which takes viewers back to the Quit India Movement of 1942. The film is inspired by Usha Mehta, a young woman who helps run an underground radio station to spread information while the British attempt to suppress the independence movement.
The story highlights the contribution of young civilians and student revolutionaries who took risks during the final years of British rule.
Border
If Independence Day means revisiting a classic war film, Border is hard to miss. JP Dutta’s 1997 film is based on the Battle of Longewala during the 1971 India Pakistan War.
Starring Sunny Deol, Suniel Shetty and Akshaye Khanna, the film follows Indian soldiers defending their post against a much larger enemy force. Its memorable dialogues, emotional scenes and songs, particularly Sandese Aate Hain have made it a long-standing favourite for patriotic movie marathons.
The Legend Of Bhagat Singh
Ajay Devgn plays revolutionary Bhagat Singh in this 2002 historical drama. The film traces his journey from a young boy affected by colonial violence to one of the most influential figures of India’s freedom movement.
It covers his association with the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association, the Central Legislative Assembly bombing and his execution at just 23.
Ajay Devgn won the National Award for Best Actor for the performance.
