If the Insidious franchise has taught audiences anything, it is that going to sleep can be a terrible idea. With Insidious: Out of the Further, the sixth film in the horror series finds a new family at the centre of its supernatural nightmare and gives the franchise a particularly new fear to exploit: the dentist’s chair.
Directed and written by Jacob Chase, the film stars Amelia Eve as Gemma, a young mother who lives with her daughter Maya in the house where she grew up. Gemma discovers that she can enter The Further, the purgatorial realm of lost souls at the heart of the franchise. But her ability comes with a disturbing twist: she can bring entities from The Further back into the real world.
The result is a film that has some genuinely effective horror sequences but struggles when it has to explain its increasingly complicated mythology.
Is Insidious: Out of the Further Actually Scary?
Yes, but not consistently. The sixth Insidious movie is at its best when it stops explaining and simply lets the horror unfold. Chase creates several memorable sequences inside The Further, with the film leaning heavily into dream logic, claustrophobic spaces and things that seem to appear exactly where they shouldn’t.
One of the strongest sequences involves Maya’s makeshift couch fort transforming into a bizarre, airless maze. The ordinary childhood hiding place becomes something much more sinister, turning a familiar domestic setting into a nightmare.
The film also understands the value of sound. Sudden noises, unsettling silences and traditional jump scares do much of the heavy lifting.
Why Is The Dental Horror In Insidious: Out of the Further So Disturbing?
Gemma works as a dental hygienist, allowing Chase to turn an everyday dental appointment into full-blown body horror. One particularly unpleasant sequence involves an elderly patient with rotten teeth and a disturbing mouth that becomes increasingly horrifying as Gemma tries to clean it.
It is gross, uncomfortable and deliberately designed to make viewers squirm. And that’s where Out of the Further works best. It takes an ordinary fear and pushes it into supernatural territory rather than simply throwing another generic demon at the audience.

Gemma is played by Amelia Eve and is the film’s new central protagonist. She is a single mother raising nine-year-old Maya, and her connection to The Further is tied to her family’s past. As an adult, Gemma is determined to give Maya the kind of stable childhood she didn’t have. But her increasingly intense nightmares reveal that she may have inherited more than memories from her mother.

The concept gives Chase plenty of opportunities to play with the boundaries between dreams and reality. Unfortunately, the film sometimes explains its mythology at length instead of trusting the imagery to do the work.

Is Insidious: Out of the Further Better Than The Original Insidious?
The original Insidious had a relatively simple emotional hook: a family desperately trying to save their child from something they don’t understand. Out of the Further has a more elaborate mythology and a new supernatural rule involving Gemma’s ability to bring entities back with her. That gives the sixth movie some fresh ideas, but it also makes the story heavier.
The new film feels closer to the dream-world horror of A Nightmare on Elm Street than the haunted-house atmosphere of the original Insidious. It is more interested in abstract spaces, nightmares and surreal imagery.
What Is Wrong With Insidious: Out of the Further?
The biggest problem is the gap between the film’s excellent horror ideas and its weaker storytelling. The dental sequence works. The couch-fort sequence works. Some of the imagery inside The Further works.
But once the film reaches its more mythology-heavy portions, the momentum starts to disappear. The third act also becomes increasingly frantic, with ghost-fighting tactics and effects that don’t always match the atmosphere established earlier.
Some critics have found the sixth film to be a more successful franchise refresh, particularly because it introduces new ideas around generational trauma, motherhood and Gemma’s ability to pull entities out of The Further.
Insidious: Out of the Further Review: Final Verdict
Insidious: Out of the Further is caught between two versions of itself. One is a genuinely creepy horror movie packed with inventive set pieces, disturbing dental imagery and claustrophobic nightmare sequences.
The other is an increasingly complicated supernatural franchise sequel that spends too much time explaining its own mythology. When it embraces the nightmare, it works. When it tries to explain the nightmare, it starts to wobble.
