After a seven-month wait, Jana Nayagan has finally cleared its biggest hurdle but not without changes. Vijay’s much-awaited final film before his full-time political career has received an ‘A’ certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Along with the clearance, however, the board directed the makers to make 12 modifications in the categories including dialogues, visuals, religious references, political mentions and even a few character names.
Here’s everything that changed before Jana Nayagan heads to theatres.
Jana Nayagan Finally Clears CBFC
Originally slated for a January 9 Pongal release, Jana Nayagan remained stuck in the certification process for months. The much-awaited film finally received its censor certificate on July 9.
According to the CBFC certificate, the H. Vinoth directorial has been awarded an ‘A’ (Adults Only) certificate and has a final runtime of 183 minutes and 11 seconds (3 hours, 3 minutes and 11 seconds).
While the runtime remains unchanged, the makers had to implement several modifications before receiving the green signal.
What Are The 12 Changes CBFC Asked For?
The certification document, as per NDTV, lists a series of edits across multiple scenes.
Among the most notable changes are:

A visual showing Dr BR Ambedkar on a book cover has been modified.

A dialogue referring to “Ambedkar… to… TVK sattam” has been replaced.

Every mention of “TVK” in both audio and visuals has been muted or modified.

A sequence featuring the Indian national flag has been removed.

The words “Bhagavathan” and “Ranganathar” have been muted.

The abusive words “Thevidiya Paiya” and “Oththa” have also been muted.
Religious References, Dialogues And Visuals Changed
The CBFC also sought changes in scenes involving religious references and sensitive imagery.
The board instructed the makers to:

Remove the word “OM” wherever it appears in a dialogue explaining Operation Meluha.

Mute or replace a dialogue referring to the hanging of Saddam Hussein.

Replace a visual showing a District Collector’s office badge being rolled down in a disrespectful manner.

Mute the entire dialogue beginning with “Ponnoda… kuduthu vachirukkanu, Udambu erukkunu.”

Remove another dialogue containing the words “India en kalla vizha vaikaren.”

Delete and replace a child-burning visual.

Mute the word “Siluvailla.”

Replace the name “Sheela Rani” wherever it appears in the film.
How Much Was Actually Edited?
The CBFC directed the makers to carry out 20 seconds of deletions and 10 seconds of replacements, with the film’s overall runtime remaining exactly the same.
With certification finally complete, Jana Nayagan is finally set for release. Directed by H. Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, the film also stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol and Mamitha Baiju in pivotal roles. It is now expected to hit theatres on July 24.
