After months of uncertainty, Jana Nayagan is finally heading to theatres. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s final film has been cleared by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), ending a seven-month-long certification battle that delayed its original Pongal release. The H Vinoth directorial has reportedly received an ‘A’ (Adults Only) certificate and is now expected to hit theatres on July 24.
Jana Nayagan Gets ‘A’ Certificate
According to news agency PTI, industry sources confirmed on Thursday that Jana Nayagan has been granted an ‘A’ certificate by the CBFC. An ‘A’ certification means the film can only be viewed by audiences aged 18 and above.
Such certificates are typically awarded to films containing strong violence, mature themes, explicit language or other content considered suitable only for adults.
The film was originally expected to receive a U/A certificate after the makers incorporated changes suggested by the examining committee. However, the certification process reportedly stalled after a committee member raised objections, claiming that certain scenes could hurt public sentiments.
Why Was Jana Nayagan Delayed?
The Vijay starrer was initially scheduled to release on January 9, 2026, ahead of Pongal. It was first submitted to the CBFC on December 19, 2025. After making the requested changes, the makers resubmitted the film in January. According to reports, they did not receive any further response, prompting the production house to approach the court.
During the legal proceedings, the CBFC stated that the film had been referred to its revising committee after an examining committee member filed an internal complaint. The prolonged certification process eventually delayed the film by nearly seven months.
Release Date Finally Locked
With the censor certificate now in place, Jana Nayagan is expected to release in theatres on July 24. A source from the Tamil Nadu Film Distributors’ Association said the film is likely to open in around 1,000 theatres across Tamil Nadu, making it one of the state’s biggest releases this year.
Produced by KVN Productions, the film stars Vijay, Bobby Deol, Prakash Raj, Pooja Hegde and Mamitha Baiju in key roles.
The certification delay wasn’t the only hurdle faced by the makers. In April, HD prints of Jana Nayagan surfaced on piracy websites while the film was still awaiting CBFC clearance. The leak sent shockwaves through the Tamil film industry, especially as it came just ahead of Vijay’s political debut in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
