John Douglas, the guitarist, vocalist and songwriter of the Scottish indie rock band Trashcan Sinatras, has died following a brief illness. He was 62.
The musician passed away in the early hours of August 3, surrounded by his loved ones, only days after the release of the band’s latest album, Ever the Optimist. The record marked Trashcan Sinatras’ first full-length studio album in 10 years,.
Confirming the news on social media, the band shared an emotional statement announcing the loss of their longtime bandmate and friend.
“We are devastated to inform all of you that we have lost our dear friend and brother John after a brief illness.”
The statement continued, “He died peacefully in the early hours of Monday the 3rd August 2026, surrounded by loved ones, his beautiful voice and songs filling the room.”
Following the announcement, fans flooded social media with tributes, remembering Douglas not only for his music but also for his warmth and kindness. One fan wrote, “Talent, heart, kindness…he had it all,” while another described the release of the band’s new album as “bittersweet.”
Who Was John Douglas?
Born on December 3, 1963, in Irvine, Scotland, John Douglas developed a passion for music while growing up in the town’s thriving post-punk and indie music scene during the early 1980s, according to The Herald.
In 1986, he co-founded Trashcan Sinatras, a band that would go on to become one of Scotland’s most respected indie rock groups. Douglas remained a key member throughout the band’s journey by contributing as a guitarist, songwriter and vocalist across every studio album the group released.
Known for his melodic guitar work and thoughtful songwriting, Douglas played an important role in shaping the band’s signature sound.
A Career Built With Trashcan Sinatras
The band first performed covers of songs by artists including The Velvet Underground and The Clash before beginning to write their own material. Their demos attracted attention from music industry executives which eventually led to a recording contract with Go! Discs in 1987.
Trashcan Sinatras released their debut album, Cake, in 1990. More than three decades later, the album was reissued in 2023 and finally entered the UK’s Top 10 charts. Over the years, the band released several studio albums.
He once described the long gap before the band’s 2004 album Weightlifting as a “troubled journey,” saying the experience ultimately strengthened both their friendships and creative partnership.
Away from Trashcan Sinatras, Douglas also enjoyed a successful career as a solo musician and collaborated with several well-known artists.
He frequently toured with the band of his partner, Scottish singer-songwriter Eddi Reader, and performed across UK and Ireland. Throughout his career, he also shared the stage with musicians including Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub, Jill Jackson, James Grant of Love & Money, Withered Hand and Martin McAloon of Prefab Sprout.
Douglas’ final project with Trashcan Sinatras was Ever the Optimist, released on July 31. The album marked the band’s first full-length release in a decade and arrived shortly after the group reunited for a special 40th anniversary performance at Irvine’s Harbour Arts Centre where all five members performed together on stage for the first time in almost seven years.
