‘Legends’ Review: Netflix Crime Drama with Steve Coogan Is Less Than the Sum of Its Parts

Netflix  crime thriller ‘Legend’ refers to the carefully built fake identity an undercover agent lives by—covering everything from their name and history to their behaviour and personal life. The Netflix series Legends builds its entire story around this idea, exploring what it means to live inside a lie for the sake of duty.

Legend Story Overview

Set in Britain during the 1980s and early 1990s, the series takes place during a severe heroin crisis that is spreading across cities and communities. The government, under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, launches a strict crackdown on drug networks and organised crime.

To carry out this mission, Don Clarke is tasked with forming a secret undercover unit. He recruits a small team of officers, including Kate (Hayley Squires), Bailey (Aml Ameen), Erin (Jasmine Blackborow), and Guy (Tom Burke). Among them, Guy is selected for deep undercover work, despite the personal cost it brings, especially on his marriage with Sophie (Charlotte Ritchie).

Their mission is dangerous and complex: infiltrate powerful drug syndicates operated by British and Turkish criminal groups and dismantle them from within.

Performance and Character Development

One of the strongest aspects of Legends is how it shows the psychological transformation of undercover agents. Guy, in particular, undergoes a major shift as he becomes deeply involved in the criminal world he is supposed to destroy.

The series effectively shows how an assumed identity can slowly replace a real one, blurring moral boundaries and emotional stability. This internal conflict gives the show its strongest dramatic moments..

Legend Series Cast

The cast includes Tom Burke, Steve Coogan, Hayley Squires, Aml Ameen, Tom Hughes, and Jasmine Blackborow.  It is a six-part series created by Neil Forsyth, inspired by real-life undercover operations in British history.

At the centre of the show is Don Clarke, played by Steve Coogan, a veteran undercover expert who trains new recruits. He constantly reminds them that success depends not just on creating a false identity, but fully believing in it. The series quickly establishes that this kind of work is not glamorous—it is mentally exhausting and emotionally risky.

Legend Pacing and Storytelling

The early episodes of Legends are engaging, with sharp editing, strong visuals, and a tense atmosphere that keeps viewers invested. The storytelling feels fresh as the team learns how drug networks operate from the inside.

But as the series progresses, the pacing slows significantly. The narrative becomes more repetitive, focusing heavily on routine surveillance and operational struggles. While this may be intended to reflect the realism of undercover work, it also reduces the overall tension and engagement.

Final Verdict About Legend

Overall, Legends starts with a strong concept and promising execution, supported by solid performances from Steve Coogan and the ensemble cast including Tom Burke and Hayley Squires. Its exploration of identity, deception, and psychological strain is compelling at first.

However, the series struggles to maintain momentum. Despite its serious themes and realistic tone, it eventually falls into familiar crime-drama patterns and loses some of its initial impact. It remains an interesting watch, but not one that fully lives up to its early promise.
