When And Where To Watch Main Vaapas Aaunga
Netflix has officially announced that Main Vaapas Aaunga will start streaming on August 7. Sharing the announcement on Instagram, the platform wrote, “78 saal pehle jo kahaani adhoori reh gayi thi, woh ab poori hogi! Watch Main Vaapas Aaunga, out 7 August, on Netflix!”
The film joins Netflix’s packed August slate and is expected to find an even wider audience after its impressive theatrical run.
What Is Main Vaapas Aaunga About?
Directed by Imtiaz Ali, Main Vaapas Aaunga is not just another Partition film. At its heart, it’s a story about memories, love and the emotional wounds that never truly heal.
The story follows 95-year-old Ishar Singh, played by Naseeruddin Shah, who suffers a stroke while trying to return to Pakistan. As he slips in and out of memory, his grandson Keenu (Vedang Raina) begins uncovering fragments of his grandfather’s past.
Those memories transport viewers to pre-Partition India, where a young Ishar’s life is intertwined with Afsana/Jiya, played by Sharvari, and Nirvair Singh, portrayed by Diljit Dosanjh. Together, they paint a deeply personal picture of love, separation and the human cost of Partition that stretches across generations.
Main Vaapas Aaunga’s Box-Office Journey
When Main Vaapas Aaunga released in theatres on June 12, it opened to modest box office numbers. Many expected the film to disappear within a week. But that’s not what happened.
Strong word of mouth slowly changed its fate. Audiences praised Imtiaz Ali’s storytelling, Naseeruddin Shah’s moving performance, the chemistry between Vedang Raina and Sharvari, and A.R. Rahman’s soulful music. The film went on to enjoy a theatrical run of more than 50 days, emerging as one of Bollywood’s biggest sleeper hits of the year.
Producer Mohit Choudhary later revealed that the film had recovered its entire investment through theatrical and non-theatrical revenue streams, officially making it a commercial success.
Calling it a “people’s hit,” he said the audience’s love and positive word of mouth transformed the film’s box office journey.
