Mirzapur: The Movie is gearing up for a strong opening weekend at the box office. Film trade expert Girish Wankhede predicted that the much-anticipated theatrical adaptation could earn around Rs 50 crore over its opening weekend.

Speaking to NDTV, Wankhede said the film’s advance bookings were looking “above average” ahead of its theatrical release. He estimated that the Pankaj Tripathi and Ali Fazal-starrer could collect between Rs 12 crore and Rs 15 crore on its opening day. The overall opening weekend performance will depend majorly on audience response and word of mouth.

The film carries the huge popularity of the Mirzapur franchise into cinemas for the first time. This makes its theatrical debut one of the most closely watched Bollywood releases of the week.

Franchise Popularity Could Drive Initial Footfalls

The Mirzapur universe has built a fan base over three seasons, with its characters, dialogue and gritty depiction of power struggles becoming deeply embedded in celebrated culture.

However, Wankhede told the news outlet that the film’s adult-oriented content, including violence and profanity, could limit its appeal among family audiences. He added that while the franchise’s popularity could help garner strong initial footfalls, sustained box-office success would depend on audience reactions after release.

The film has also received an A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification, in keeping with the franchise’s reputation for graphic violence and strong language.

When Is Mirzapur: The Movie Releasing?

Mirzapur: The Movie is scheduled to release in theatres on September 4. The film marks the first theatrical expansion of the cult Mirzapur franchise.

The film is helmed by Gurmmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna. It is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar, with Kassim Jagmagia and Vishal Ramchandani serving as co-producers under the banner of Excel Entertainment. Amazon MGM Studios and Excel Entertainment are backing the film’s move from the streaming space to cinemas.

Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Divyenndu Lead the Cast

The film brings many of the franchise’s most recognisable characters back to the screen. Pankaj Tripathi returns as Akhandanand Tripathi, popularly known as Kaleen Bhaiya, while Ali Fazal reprises his role as Guddu Pandit.

One of the biggest attractions for fans is the return of Divyenndu as Munna Tripathi, also known as Munna Bhaiya. The ensemble cast also includes Abhishek Banerjee, Rasika Dugal, Shweta Tripathi Sharma, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Ravi Kishan, Jitendra Kumar, Harshita Gaur, Sushant Singh, Mohit Malik, Sheeba Chadha, Rajesh Tailang, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Sonal Chauhan, Pramod Pathak and Anangsha Biswas, among others.

An Untold Chapter From the World of Mirzapur

According to the makers, Mirzapur: The Movie explores an untold chapter from the Mirzapur universe. The film returns to the world of gang wars, family rivalries, revenge and the relentless battle for power that defined the original series.

The Mirzapur universe has revolved around the struggle for control of the town’s criminal and political ecosystem. Alliances have constantly shifted and power has often changed hands through violence and betrayal. The film is expected to retain that key conflict even as expanding the scale of the franchise for a theatrical audience.

Can Mirzapur Convert OTT Popularity Into Box-Office Numbers?

The key question now is whether the franchise’s streaming popularity can translate into theatrical business. A projected Rs 50 crore opening weekend would give Mirzapur: The Movie an important start.

With fan favourites returning, Munna Bhaiya’s comeback adding to the excitement, and advance bookings generating early buzz, Mirzapur: The Movie is heading into its theatrical release with much expectations.
