Obsession, the horror-romantic hit from Focus Features, has now taken the mantle of the studio’s most successful film ever after it crossed $224.7 million worldwide, reports Deadline. This figure makes Obsession earn more than the entire lifetime global total grosses of several big titles from the Universal-owned studio, which include Downton Abbey (2019) ($193.3 million), Nosferatu ($181.8 million), Burn After Reading ($164.3 million), and Darkest Hour ($150.3 million). The directorial debut of Curry Barker, Obsession is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular box office journeys of recent times.

Record-Breaking Run Defies Industry Norms

The movie recorded the highest percentage drop in its fourth weekend compared to any horror film before. Also, this was the highest grossing fourth weekend in the history of horror films. The former record holder for both was The Blair Witch Project, which saw only a 9 percent drop in its fourth weekend in 1999 and earned $24.2 million from that weekend.

Perhaps even more remarkably, Obsession is the first film since the 1982 film E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial to have shown consecutive rises in revenue for two successive weekends after its opening.

From Modest Opening to Global Phenomenon

Even though the movie Obsession debuted with just $17 million, it went on to become a hit in a short while due to its word-of-mouth publicity. Obsession performed better in its second week compared to its first week, and even better in its third week.

Obsession was bought by Focus Features from the Toronto International Film Festival for about $15 million, and thus the movie is now performing beyond everyone’s expectations. However, Obsession was not the only movie that created news headlines during the weekend. In this case, Backrooms, produced by A24, became the highest-grossing movie for the studio. Moreover, the movie Michael became Lionsgate’s highest-grossing movie.

Obsession India Box Office Collection

Obsession maintained its streak of success in India with yet another amazing Monday release. It earned roughly Rs. 4.15 crore (435,000 USD), which was approximately 4 per cent more than what it had made on its second Friday, recording an astonishing 70 per cent week-on-week growth, sources reported by Pinkvilla. In general, the performance of a movie decreases between 30-50 percent from Friday to Monday. Nonetheless, Obsession has been an exception to such a trend.

Rs. 50 Crore Milestone Within Reach

With 11 days of theatrical release under its belt, the movie has grossed around Rs. 46.75 crore (US$ 4.9 million) in India. The movie is likely to reach the milestone of Rs. 50 crore today with the help of “Discount Tuesday.” According to current estimates, the earnings for the second week will be around Rs. 36 crore, taking the total to around Rs. 58 crore by tomorrow.

Can Obsession Reach Rs. 100 Crore In India?

With the fantastic run at the box office, Obsession will find it easy to cross Rs. 80 crores, while even reaching Rs. 90 crores would seem an achievable task following the second Monday’s fantastic run. It must be mentioned that crossing the mark of Rs. 100 crores does not seem like too much of a dream at this juncture, considering the movie’s performance. However, the struggle has only just begun, as there are Hollywood as well as Bollywood movies slated for release in the coming two weeks.
