Outlander: Blood Of My Blood Season 2 Episode 3, titled “Rabbits Don’t Swim,” puts Ellen MacKenzie at the centre of the action. While Brian Fraser and Dougal MacKenzie leave with their men to join the Jacobite forces, Castle Leoch is left vulnerable. That is when James MacKinney arrives with his men and tries to take control of the castle. But he makes one major mistake. He underestimates Ellen and the women of Clan MacKenzie.
The episode ends with MacKinney dead, Janet dead, Ellen revealing a major secret and Lord Lovat’s betrayal putting Brian and Dougal in serious danger.
Here’s the ending explained.
Who Attacked Castle Leoch?
James MacKinney arrives at Castle Leoch while most of the clan’s fighting men are away. He kills the castle guard and takes the women prisoner. MacKinney believes he has a claim to Castle Leoch because he thinks Ellen’s father should have named him the clan’s leader. But Colum points out that the castle and its lands are now legally in Ellen’s name. That creates a problem for MacKinney. He cannot simply take the estate from her.
Ellen, meanwhile, hides in a secret passage and listens to MacKinney’s conversation with Colum. Instead of waiting for Brian or Dougal to return, she decides to fight back.
How Did Ellen Defeat MacKinney’s Men?
Ellen remembers a lesson her father taught her when she was young. He told her that being predictable made her easy to find. If people expected her to behave in a certain way, she could use those expectations against them.
Ellen frees the other women and convinces them to fight. They use the castle itself as a weapon. They release the dogs, spread oil across the floor and attack the men when they least expect it. They also use the chapel and other parts of the castle to set traps.
Ellen eventually takes down the remaining guards in the belfry. The episode turns the women of Castle Leoch into an unexpected fighting force. As Harriet Slater explained in an interview, the episode was presented to her as “Home Alone, but with knives.”
Did Ellen Kill James MacKinney?
Yes. The final confrontation takes place in the great hall. MacKinney grabs Maura and threatens her as Ellen approaches with her bow. Colum manages to get hold of part of his broken cane and attacks MacKinney. The distraction gives Ellen a clear shot. She fires her arrow and kills MacKinney. His son Robert manages to escape. But Ellen’s victory comes at a heavy cost.
How Did Janet Die?
Janet is killed while helping Ellen and the other women defend Castle Leoch. She suffers a fatal wound during the fight. Her death becomes one of the episode’s most emotional moments. Before Janet dies, Ellen tells her that she is pregnant with Brian’s child.
Ellen then promises that if the baby is a girl, she will name her Janet. That reveal gives the scene an important connection to the wider Outlander story. Janet “Jenny” Fraser is Jamie Fraser’s older sister in the Outlander universe. The series is taking a different route with Janet’s death from Diana Gabaldon’s books. In the books, Janet dies from a fever rather than during the Castle Leoch attack.
What Was Lord Lovat’s Betrayal?
This is the episode’s biggest political twist. MacKinney reveals that Lord Lovat has secretly sided with the Crown. That means Brian and Dougal are marching into a dangerous situation without knowing the full truth. Lovat is pretending to work with the Jacobite forces while secretly planning to help the British. The small number of men MacKinney brought to Castle Leoch suddenly makes sense. The rest are apparently connected to Lovat’s larger plan.
After MacKinney’s death, Colum tells Ellen what he has learned. Ellen immediately understands what it means for Brian. She believes he is in danger and decides to leave Castle Leoch to warn him.
Why Is Lovat A Threat To Brian And Ellen?
Lovat is not only playing a political game. His relationship with Brian is also becoming increasingly tense. Brian has chosen Ellen despite the conflict between their families. Lovat sees that relationship as a weakness. He even warns Brian that wars have casualties that do not always happen on the battlefield. She is now trying to reach Brian before Lovat’s plan unfolds.
What Does The Ending Mean For Brian And Dougal?
Brian and Dougal are still unaware of the full betrayal when the episode closes. They are moving forward with the Jacobite forces while Lovat secretly works with the Crown. Ellen now knows the truth. She sets off with Grace to warn them. The battle ahead is no longer just about the Jacobite cause.
It is also about whether Ellen can reach Brian before Lovat’s plan puts him and Dougal in danger. And with Ellen pregnant, the stakes are even higher. The woman who will become Jamie Fraser’s mother is now fighting to protect the future of her family, even as that future has already cost her a sister.
