Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi’s courtroom drama Prahaar: The Untold Story of Ujjwal Nikam has finally locked a new release date. After missing its previously announced August 7 release, the Avinash Arun Dhaware directorial will now arrive in theatres in the month of October. The new date was confirmed by the makers on Thursday, August 13.
The film is based on the life and career of veteran public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, who has been associated with several high-profile criminal cases in India. While the project was initially scheduled for August, the makers did not announce an official reason for the postponement.
Prahaar: When Will Rajkummar Rao’s Film Release?
Prahaar was earlier supposed to hit cinemas on August 7 which placed it in an already crowded month for Hindi releases. August also has Awarapan 2 and Batwara 1947 arriving on August 14 while Yash’s Toxic: A Fairytale For Grown Ups is also among the major releases lined up during the month.
With the new date, Prahaar will now arrive during the Dussehra period.
Rajkummar Rao Faces A Double Release Date Clash
October 16 could turn out to be a busy day for Rajkummar Rao as his other upcoming film Raftaar, co-starring Keerthy Suresh, is also scheduled to release on the same date. This means Rao could potentially have two films arriving in theatres on the same day.
Rajkummar Rao Plays Ujjwal Nikam In Prahaar
For Prahaar, Rajkummar Rao takes on the role of Ujjwal Nikam and has undergone a noticeable physical transformation for the part. The actor had earlier spoken about gaining around 9 to 10 kilograms for the biopic and changing his hair to make his appearance closer to that of the veteran prosecutor.
The transformation was not limited to his appearance. Rao is also seen using Marathi dialogues in the teaser, while the courtroom sequences show his character dealing with intense legal proceedings and cases carrying enormous public attention.
The real life Ujjwal Nikam has also praised Rao’s portrayal. Nikam said that Rao had delivered a “remarkable performance” and praised director Avinash Arun’s work on the film.
What Is Prahaar About?
The film follows Ujjwal Nikam’s journey as a public prosecutor with his work on some of the country’s most closely followed criminal cases forming an important part of the story.
The 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case is one of the central events highlighted in the film. Nikam served as the special public prosecutor in the trial of Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving attacker from the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
The story also touches upon the larger investigation surrounding the attacks and the legal battle that followed. Nikam had previously handled other major cases such as the 1993 Bombay bombings and the Gulshan Kumar murder case.
The teaser, released in June, also offered glimpses of Nikam’s life away from the courtroom. The film explores the pressures that came with handling cases involving violence, terrorism and intense public scrutiny, while also looking at the effect of that career on his personal life.
Wamiqa Gabbi, Jaideep Ahlawat And Sikandar Kher In The Cast
Wamiqa Gabbi stars alongside Rajkummar Rao in the film, with Jaideep Ahlawat, Sikandar Kher and Tarun Sharma also part of the cast.
Prahaar is directed by Avinash Arun Dhaware, known for films including Three of Us, and is produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films.
