Sunjay Kapur inheritance battle: Sunjay Kapur, the industrialist and businessman died in 2025, The death of industrialist Sunjay Kapur shocked many in India and overseas. However, what has drawn even more attention is the fierce legal fight over his massive estate, estimated at nearly ₹30,000 crore. The inheritance dispute has now turned into a high-profile courtroom battle involving his third wife and widow Priya, former wife Karishma Kapoor and children.
The controversy began when Sunjay Kapur’s third wife and widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur, showed her claim in her late husband’s will. The document was allegedly signed in March at Mumbai’s Taj Hotel. Soon after this will surfaced, Sunjay Kapur’s children from his second marriage to actor Karisma Kapoor, Samaira and Kiaan approached the Delhi High Court, challenging Priya’s claim over the inheritance.
Although Karisma Kapoor is closely involved in the case but not directly as she was excluded from the will. She is representing her children in the legal proceedings.
Karisma Kapoor is not the only former spouse left out of the alleged will. Nandita Mahtani, Sunjay Kapur’s first wife and a noted fashion designer and socialite, is also excluded. According to a clarification by Karisma Kapoor’s lawyer, the actor is not seeking any financial benefit from the will, even though her name does not appear in it.
As per report, Sunjay Kapur had intended his wealth to be passed only to his children and immediate family members, and had deliberately excluded his ex-wives. This explains why neither Karisma Kapoor nor Nandita Mahtani is mentioned in the alleged document. Since Sunjay Kapur and Nandita Mahtani did not have children together, she is not directly involved in the inheritance dispute.
Priya vs Karisma: Case Gets Murkier Turn
The legal fight has intensified further. Priya Kapur now approached the Supreme Court of India, seeking certified copies of documents linked to Sunjay and Karisma’s 2016 divorce proceedings, according to an ANI report.
The case will be heard by a bench led by Justice AS Chandurkar, which will decide whether Priya Kapur can access these confidential records. In her application, she specifically asked for the settlement and custody agreement.
Earlier, Priya had claimed that Sunjay Kapur’s children with Karisma Kapoor Samaira and Kiaan had already received ₹1,900 crore worth of assets from the family trust.
Priya’s appeal aims to clarify the financial arrangements and child custody terms agreed upon after Sunjay and Karisma separated in 2016. During court proceedings in November 2025, lawyers representing Karisma Kapoor’s children stated that the education fees for their overseas universities had yet to be released by Priya Kapur.
Sunjay and Karisma’s children Samaira and Kiaan have also accused Priya Kapur of relying on a will that they claim is “forged and fabricated”. They have requested a forensic investigation, pointing to alleged discrepancies in Sunjay Kapur’s signature and concerns over the document’s digital footprint.
Their legal team has questioned why the will leaves Sunjay Kapur’s entire estate to his wife, while allegedly excluding his mother and siblings. They have also highlighted Priya Kapur’s swift move to take charge of Sona Comstar shortly after his death as a cause for suspicion.
The will has faced further scrutiny over claims that some witnesses were not physically present when it was supposedly signed. During a September 2025 hearing in the Delhi High Court, allegations of collusion were raised.
Samaira and Kiaan have also sought an interim injunction to stop Priya Kapur from selling, transferring, or dealing with assets that belonged to their father. Sunjay Kapur died at the age of 53 after suffering a sudden heart attack while playing polo in England. Since then, his vast estate has remained tied up in legal disputes.
