The world of celebrity parenting often comes wrapped in luxury vacations, lavish birthday parties and extravagant gifts. But actor R Madhavan is looking at the conversation a little differently. In a recent appearance on the YouTube channel 100 Year Life Project by ACKO, the actor spoke candidly about the growing culture of excess around children and why he feels many parents today are unknowingly putting pressure on themselves in the race to “keep up.”

And one particular statement from the actor instantly caught attention online.

‘Some Parents Spend More On Birthdays Than I Did On My Marriage’

Reflecting on modern parenting trends, Madhavan admitted he is often shocked by how extravagant children’s celebrations have become. “I think some kids in LKG are paying more fees than I spent on my entire engineering,” he said while discussing the rising cost of elite schooling.

The actor then spoke about lavish birthday celebrations, saying, “People spend a fortune on the first birthday of a child. I don’t think I spent as much on my marriage as some people spend on a birthday party.” While clarifying that he was not criticising anyone for spending their money, Madhavan questioned whether children even understand the scale of these celebrations. “The child probably doesn’t even realise,” he added.

Why Parenting Pressure Is Becoming A Social Competition

Madhavan also highlighted another side of modern parenting that many families quietly relate to, the pressure of return gifts and social obligations. According to the actor, some parents avoid birthday invitations entirely because they feel stressed about maintaining the same standard when hosting their own child’s party later.

He explained that many families end up keeping mental notes about gifts, return favours and party expectations, turning what should be joyful occasions into stressful social calculations. The actor’s observations struck a chord online, especially among parents who admitted that children’s events today often feel more like social showcases than intimate family celebrations.

The Values He Wanted Son Vedaant To Learn

While discussing parenting, Madhavan became emotional while speaking about his son, Vedaant Madhavan, who has made India proud with his achievements in international swimming competitions. The actor said one lesson he constantly tried to teach his son was gratitude. He recalled explaining privilege to Vedaant by comparing the cost of luxury items with the annual salary of workers around them, helping him understand the value of money and hard work. “The attitude of gratitude is important,” Madhavan said, adding that children must understand they are privileged because of someone else’s sacrifices and effort.

He also shared that he ensured Vedaant treated everyone with respect, from security guards to drivers and housekeeping staff, and encouraged him to greet them politely rather than treat them as invisible.

The Parenting Advice That Changed Madhavan’s Thinking

The actor also revealed one parenting tip he received years ago while living in Canada that stayed with him permanently: “Don’t give your child too much free time.” According to Madhavan, a family he once stayed with advised him to keep children engaged in activities they genuinely enjoy, whether sports, hobbies, arts or group activities, especially during their teenage years.

He said the idea was not to burden children, but to keep them creatively and socially occupied so they remain focused and emotionally balanced.

R Madhavan’s Family Life And Current Work

Madhavan married Sarita Birje in 1999, and the couple welcomed Vedaant in 2005. Over the years, the actor has often spoken proudly about watching his son grow into a disciplined athlete rather than pushing him toward films.

On the professional front, Madhavan has been balancing films across Hindi, Tamil and international projects. Following the success of projects like Rocketry: The Nambi Effect and his recent appearance in Dhurandhar, the actor continues to remain one of the most respected and thoughtful voices in Indian cinema, both on screen and off it.
