The ongoing controversy surrounding Ranveer Singh and Don 3 continues to dominate entertainment headlines after the Federation of Western India Cine Employees withdrew its non-cooperation directive against the actor. The move, announced during a press conference in Mumbai on Wednesday, immediately triggered speculation that the federation had backed down after receiving a legal notice from Ranveer Singh’s team. However, FWICE president BN Tiwari has strongly denied that the organisation acted under pressure. “We have not withdrawn the notice on gunpoint,” Tiwari said while addressing the media, dismissing reports that the actor’s legal response forced the federation to reverse its stand. According to Tiwari, FWICE had already begun reconsidering the directive after receiving communication from the Producers Guild of India and the Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association on May 29.
Meetings with the organisations reportedly took place the following day, after which the federation decided to revoke the notice. Tiwari also maintained that FWICE does not view such reversals as defeats, describing the film industry as “one family” where disputes are often resolved through discussion. “If someone feels it is their victory, we are happy with that too,” he added.
What Sparked The Don 3 Dispute?
The controversy began escalating in recent weeks after reports surfaced suggesting that Ranveer Singh had exited Don 3, the much-anticipated next chapter in the iconic action franchise directed by Farhan Akhtar. The franchise carries considerable legacy in Bollywood. The original Don starred Amitabh Bachchan in 1978, while Shah Rukh Khan later headlined Farhan Akhtar’s modern reboots, Don and Don 2.
In 2023, Farhan officially announced that Ranveer Singh would take over the lead role in Don 3, a casting decision that divided fans but also generated enormous curiosity around the future of the franchise. Industry reports later claimed tensions emerged after Ranveer allegedly walked away from the project following the success of Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar. According to reports, Farhan Akhtar approached FWICE earlier this year, claiming the actor’s abrupt exit had caused significant financial losses, reportedly around Rs 45 crore, to the production.
FWICE subsequently issued a non-cooperation directive against Ranveer Singh on May 25.
Legal Notice, Industry Politics
Soon after the directive became public, Ranveer Singh’s spokesperson released an official statement emphasising the actor’s respect for the industry and everyone associated with the Don franchise. The statement noted that the actor had consciously remained silent because professional matters should be handled with “dignity, maturity and mutual respect.” During Wednesday’s press conference, BN Tiwari confirmed that the actor’s legal notice had questioned the federation’s authority to issue the directive and demanded its withdrawal within 48 hours.
Still, Tiwari insisted the legal notice was not the reason behind the reversal.
The issue has also exposed broader tensions within sections of the Hindi film industry. Veteran producer TP Aggarwal recently criticised FWICE’s actions, accusing the organisation of “gundagardi”, a Hindi term often used to describe bullying or intimidation tactics. Responding to the criticism, Tiwari attempted to lighten the mood, joking, “We’re not such big goons after all.” He further revealed that discussions are expected to take place between Ranveer Singh, Farhan Akhtar and producers to find a mutually acceptable resolution.
For now, the future of Don 3 remains uncertain. But the controversy has once again highlighted the increasingly complex relationship between stars, producers, trade bodies and large-scale franchise filmmaking in Bollywood, where creative decisions now carry enormous financial and reputational stakes.
