Reacher Season 4 Episode 6, titled Plum Out of Luck, leaves Jack Reacher in one of his most vulnerable positions yet. After finally getting his hands on the drive containing the mysterious 25-year-old photograph, Reacher loses it within minutes. Meanwhile, Russell Plum is left fighting for his life, Jacob finds himself betrayed by someone he trusted, and the search for scientist Leo Ahlquist brings Reacher closer to the truth and straight into another trap.
The episode picks up from the restaurant standoff where Lila is holding Jacob at knifepoint and demanding Anna Merrick’s drive. Before Reacher can turn the situation around, Plum arrives and armed men storm the restaurant. Smoke fills the room, gunfire breaks out and Jacob escapes Lila’s grip. Plum is shot in the chest, while Lila manages to grab the drive and escape with Amisha.
What Happens To Russell Plum And Jacob?
Before Jacob rushes Plum to the hospital, Plum reveals that he has identified the mystery scientist in the photograph as Leo Ahlquist. The name gives Reacher a new lead, but Jacob has more immediate problems to deal with.
Jacob takes Plum to the emergency room, hoping to save his life. Instead, the hospital staff become suspicious of the gunshot wound, while Jacob’s face appears on an alert. Forced to flee, he turns to his Uncle Monty for help. But Monty betrays him.
Monty agrees to meet Jacob before handing him over to the Philadelphia police. Detective Shaun Docherty then takes Jacob away, leaving his true intentions unclear. Is Docherty another threat or could he become an unlikely ally?
Why Does Tamara Finally Open Up To Reacher?
Reacher and Tamara continue their journey toward Ahlquist while trying to stay out of sight. With their faces circulating everywhere, the pair hides inside the cargo compartment of a bus. The cramped surroundings trigger Tamara’s claustrophobia, and Reacher helps distract her with multiplication problems. The moment also leads Tamara to reveal why she became so disillusioned with police work.
In an earlier case, she refused to protect a well-connected college student who had assaulted a waitress. Instead of being rewarded for doing the right thing, Tamara became the one punished for embarrassing someone powerful. Working with Reacher has slowly made her care about the job again.
Who Is Leo Ahlquist And What Does He Know?
Reacher and Tamara eventually track Ahlquist to Plutus Chemical, where they find him destroying evidence. Ahlquist already knows about the data breach because Nolan Cahill contacted him days earlier. More importantly, Ahlquist appears far less frightened than he should be.
He taunts Reacher about the photograph, suggesting that Reacher still does not understand its real significance. The mysterious image has already connected Congressman John Sampson, Nolan Cahill, General Putra and Ahlquist, but there is clearly more to the conspiracy than Reacher has uncovered.
Ahlquist’s supposed lawyer, Vance, is revealed to be connected to the armed men protecting him. Reacher and Tamara fight back, but they are eventually overwhelmed. Multiple stun guns bring Reacher down, and both of them are captured.
Why Were Reacher And Tamara Captured?
The episode makes one thing increasingly clear: someone is willing to go to extreme lengths to control the information contained in the photograph. People have already been attacked, evidence has been destroyed and mercenaries have been deployed. Now Reacher and Tamara are the latest targets. But the episode does not reveal exactly who ordered their capture.
What Happens To Reacher And Tamara In The Ending?
The final sequence sees Reacher and Tamara wake up handcuffed inside a moving van. As they figure out what is happening, Reacher realises that their captors are planning to execute them somewhere away from witnesses. He estimates that they may have less than half an hour left.
Rather than panic, Reacher tells Tamara how to face what could be their final moments. His advice is notably stripped of his usual bravado. If the doors open and their killers are waiting, he tells her to look them in the eye and face death without fear.
Then the van stops. The doors open. And guns are waiting outside. Cut to credits.
Who Is Waiting Outside The Van?
The identity of the people waiting outside is not revealed, meaning Reacher and Tamara’s fate remains unresolved at the end of the episode. Congressman Sampson has begun actively searching for Reacher and Ahlquist, while multiple factions appear to be chasing the same evidence.
That leaves several possibilities. The armed men could be working for one of the groups already connected to the photograph, Sampson could somehow be involved, or an entirely different faction could be preparing to take control of Reacher and Tamara.
