Rebel Wilson has secured a legal victory in the long running dispute surrounding her directorial debut, The Deb. An Australian court has dismissed a defamation lawsuit brought against the Hollywood actor by Charlotte MacInnes who played the lead role in the musical comedy.
According to CNN, MacInnes accused Wilson of making false claims about her in Instagram posts that were seen by millions of followers. She argued that the posts damaged her reputation, exposed her to online abuse and affected her professional opportunities. But Justice Elizabeth Raper ruled in Wilson’s favour and dismissed the case. The judge further ordered MacInnes to pay legal costs.
What Is The Case About?
The dispute centred on a series of Instagram posts shared by Wilson during the controversy surrounding The Deb. According to CNN, the actor suggested that MacInnes had withdrawn a sexual harassment complaint against the film’s producers to protect her acting and singing career.
MacInnes denied ever making such a complaint and argued before the court that Wilson’s public statements created a false narrative about her. She claimed the social media posts turned her into the target of online abuse, ridicule and hatred while also harming her career prospects.
After examining the evidence, Justice Raper concluded that only one aspect of Wilson’s statements had been established. The judge found that Wilson’s claim that suggested MacInnes had changed her account about feeling uncomfortable during an incident was supported by evidence and was not defamatory. As a result, the defamation claim was dismissed.
The Bondi Beach Apartment Incident Explained
One of the central issues in the case involved an incident at a Sydney penthouse in September 2023. According to CNN, MacInnes and producer Amanda Ghost were staying at an apartment rented by the production company after returning from Bondi Beach. Both women told the court they entered the apartment’s bathtub while wearing swimsuits after Ghost experienced a physical reaction to swimming in cold water.
Ghost said she had begun shivering uncontrollably and developed welts which led her to warm herself in the bath. MacInnes stated that she also felt cold and joined her because the bathtub was large enough for both of them.
In her affidavit, MacInnes maintained that “There was nothing sexual in any way.”
But Wilson told the court that MacInnes had described the experience differentlybefore. According to Wilson, MacInnes said she had been asked by Ghost to bathe and shower with her and had felt uncomfortable about the situation. Wilson said she interpreted those remarks as a report of possible sexual harassment on the film’s set and believed she had a responsibility as the film’s director to act on the information.
While delivering her judgment, Justice Raper remarked that the circumstances surrounding how the two women ended up sharing the bath were “unusual.”
Why Has The Deb Become Centre Of Multiple Legal Disputes?
According to CNN, the defamation lawsuit is only one part of a much larger conflict surrounding The Deb.
The musical comedy, set in rural Australia, follows two cousins preparing for a debutante ball. Although conceived as a coming of age comedy, the production has since become embroiled in several legal battles involving allegations of smear campaigns, financial misconduct and workplace disputes.
Court documents cited by CNN indicate that Wilson’s relationship with the producers had begun deteriorating even before filming started in 2023 and continued to worsen during post production.
The dispute escalated further after Wilson’s lawyer, Bryan Freedman, sent a letter to producers Amanda Ghost, Gregor Cameron and Vince Holden in June 2024. Ghost later claimed in court filings that the letter contained false and defamatory allegations regarding her conduct toward MacInnes.
Ghost and her fellow producers have separately filed a defamation lawsuit against Wilson.
Other Allegations Linked To Production
The legal conflict has expanded beyond the MacInnes case. According to CNN, Ghost has also alleged that Wilson was involved in creating online smear websites that referred to her as the “Indian Ghislaine Maxwell.” Wilson has denied any involvement.
The producers have also disputed Wilson’s public claims that they attempted to block The Deb from premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in retaliation for her raising concerns about their behaviour. Ghost has denied trying to stop the screening.
Despite the ongoing legal disputes, The Deb premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024. The film was later released in Australian cinemas earlier this year and is scheduled to arrive in US theatres in August.
