Indian cricket may have discovered its next generational superstar. At just 15 years old, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has become the biggest breakout name of IPL 2026 after delivering a sensational season that left fans, former players and celebrities stunned. The teenage batter finished the tournament with a staggering 776 runs in 16 matches, numbers that instantly transformed him from a promising youngster into one of the most discussed names in Indian cricket.

But it is not just the cricketing world paying attention anymore. This week, acclaimed filmmaker Shekhar Kapur unexpectedly joined the conversation with a nostalgic Bollywood reference that quickly went viral online.

Shekhar Kapur’s Viral Masoom Comment

Taking to X, Shekhar Kapur shared a light-hearted post about the teenage cricketer that immediately caught fans’ attention. “If Sooryavanshi wasn’t such a sensational cricketer,” Kapur wrote, “I could have cast him in Masoom.” The post quickly spread across social media platforms, with users pointing out Vaibhav’s youthful innocence and expressive face, qualities that reminded many of classic child actors from Hindi cinema’s golden era.

The comment also triggered renewed interest in Masoom, widely regarded as one of Indian cinema’s most emotionally iconic films.

Released in 1983, Masoom marked Shekhar Kapur’s directorial debut and featured performances from Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Saeed Jaffrey, Tanuja and Supriya Pathak. The film is especially remembered for launching young talents like Urmila Matondkar and Jugal Hansraj.

The Masoom Connection Comes At An Interesting Time

Kapur’s comment gained even more traction because the filmmaker recently confirmed plans for a contemporary reimagining of Masoom. The upcoming version will reportedly revisit themes of identity, family and emotional belonging through a modern lens while preserving the emotional heart of the original story.

Oscar-winning composer A. R. Rahman has also joined the project as a creative collaborator and music composer. Speaking about revisiting the classic film, Kapur recently said modern relationships and family structures have evolved significantly, making this the right time to reinterpret the story for a new generation. That context made his playful comparison between Vaibhav and a potential Masoom child actor even more memorable online.

Vaibhav’s Rise Has Been Historic

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s rise over the last year has been nothing short of extraordinary. In April 2025, he made IPL history by debuting at just 14 years and 23 days old, becoming the youngest player ever to appear in the tournament. At the time, many considered him a long-term prospect.

Just one season later, he has already emerged as one of the tournament’s most destructive and fearless batters. Cricket experts have repeatedly praised his composure, shot selection and ability to handle pressure despite his age. More importantly, he appears remarkably unfazed by the growing media attention surrounding him.

Sachin Tendulkar Also Wants To See Him In Test Cricket

The excitement surrounding Vaibhav has now extended far beyond T20 cricket. Recently, Sachin Tendulkar admitted he would like to see the teenager eventually play Test cricket for India. Speaking at the Cricinfo Honours in Mumbai, Tendulkar praised Vaibhav’s natural instincts and confidence at the crease. According to the cricket legend, young talents like Vaibhav should not be overburdened with excessive technical instructions too early in their careers.

Instead, Tendulkar suggested that allowing him freedom and confidence would help him grow naturally into a complete player over time. The endorsement from one of cricket’s greatest-ever batters only intensified calls for Vaibhav’s eventual inclusion in the Indian national setup.

Asian Games Selection Adds To Growing Expectations

The teenager’s rapid rise has already begun influencing national selection conversations. Vaibhav has reportedly been included in the 30-member probables list for the upcoming Asian Games, scheduled to take place in Aichi-Nagoya between September 19 and October 4.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has already submitted the list to the Indian Olympic Association. While no official final squad has yet been announced, Vaibhav’s inclusion among the probable names signals how seriously Indian cricket now views his future.

A Teenager Who Has Crossed Into Pop Culture

What makes Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s rise particularly fascinating is how quickly he has crossed beyond sports into mainstream pop culture. From viral edits and celebrity praise to Bollywood comparisons and national team discussions, the teenager is no longer just an IPL story.

He has become a full-fledged cultural phenomenon. And now, thanks to Shekhar Kapur’s viral Masoom remark, fans have found yet another reason to keep talking about the boy many already believe could become Indian cricket’s next superstar.
