Another incident of Shia LaBeouf being arrested during the Mardi Gras celebrations has once again placed the actor in the news. He was taken into custody for battery-related charges in New Orleans, where one of the biggest celebrations of the year was in full swing. The Mardi Gras celebrations draw more than a million people to the city, and the atmosphere is usually tense with a lot of police presence.
He started out as a child actor, but then entered the limelight as the leading man in major productions. Over the course of more than two decades, the actor’s work spans the gamut from blockbuster productions to more low-key endeavors, yielding not only commercial success but also critical acclaim. His real-life activities, however, have been the subject of fascination, with the public sometimes confusing the on-screen role with the real-life drama.
According to police, officers responded to a disturbance just before 1 a.m. in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood. Documents filed in court claim that LaBeouf became aggressive when he was told to leave by staff at the Royal Street Inn and Bar. The documents claim that he tried to hit a manager and also hit two people who tried to intervene. Witnesses held him until police arrived and he was taken to a hospital for examination before being booked for two counts of simple battery.
The arrest took place in the midst of Mardi Gras in the French Quarter streets that were pulsating with activity. Statistics provided by the city in prior years reveal that arrests increase in correlation with disorderly conduct statistics for the busiest nights. Witnesses described a chaotic scene that developed when word spread about the arrest. Videos of the arrest were available online within a few hours.
Under Louisiana law, the act of purposely making physical contact without the consent of the other individual is defined as simple battery. This can lead to either jail time or fines. Legal experts explain that the outcome is usually determined by witness testimony and any prior history of the defendant. LaBeouf is scheduled to appear in court.
This is not the first time LaBeouf has run afoul of the law. His arrest in Savannah in 2017, which saw him sent to rehab, is what inspired his movie *Honey Boy*. In 2020, LaBeouf was sued in civil court by singer FKA twigs, whom he allegedly abused. LaBeouf denied the allegations, and the case was settled in 2025. LaBeouf has talked extensively about his battle with addiction and has gone to rehab before.
