After 17 long years, Shrek has finally made his way back to the screen. The first trailer of Shrek 5 is out and it brings back everything fans missed: the swamp, the sarcasm, and of course, Shrek, Fiona and Donkey. The film marks the return of Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy who will reprise their voice roles.
The teaser was dropped by Universal Pictures more than a year ahead of the film’s theatrical release.
Shrek 5: What Does The Teaser Show
The teaser opens with a storybook-style recap of the original Shrek film from 2001. It then quickly shifts tone when Donkey interrupts the narration by hinting at a new approach to the familiar world of Far, Far Away.
The visuals suggest a slightly updated animation style compared to earlier films. The characters are seen travelling once again through the fantasy world where they face multiple situations including giant encounters, law enforcement and unusual creatures.
A parody moment in the teaser also shows a terrifying snowman character that appears to parody Frozen’s Olaf. He is heard saying, “you wanna date a snowman?”
The teaser also brings back Gingy who appears in his usual chaotic style. He is seen with two gumdrop buttons placed on his rear and then jokingly declaring that he is “caked up like a friggin’ bakery,”
Towards the end of the teaser, Shrek, Fiona, their children and Donkey are seen stuck in a jail cell. Donkey as usual get on Shrek’s nerves by singing Baby Come Back and Roxanne.
Shrek 5: New Characters Join The Cast
One of the major updates in Shrek 5 is the introduction of Shrek and Fiona’s children. The characters – Felicia, Fergus and Farkle – who are voiced by Zendaya, Marcello Hernandez and Skylar Gisondo.
Along with the returning voice cast, the film is directed by longtime franchise contributors Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn with Brad Ableson as co-director. Production is handled by Gina Shay and Illumination chief Chris Meledandri.
Shrek 5: Release Date
Shrek 5 is scheduled to release in theatres on June 30, 2027. The film comes more than two decades after the original Shrek released in 2001 and went on to win the first-ever Animated Feature Oscar.
The upcoming installment also follows two Puss in Boots spin-offs released after the main series went on hiatus.
