Sydney Sweeney has finally spoken out on her numerous nude scenes as Cassie Howard in the finale season of Sam Levinson’s Euphoria. Fans have criticised the character arc of Cassie who many people believed diverted from her original portrayal and became more provocative. While Sweeney was as much “surprised by the ending” as Euphoria fans, she saw Cassie’s actions from a different lens.
Before diving into the details of what exactly her thoughts are, we would like to give a healthy warning that there are spoilers of Euphoria Season 3 ahead.
During the finale, Cassie is seen trying to navigate through life after the horrific death of her husband Nate (Jacob Elordi). She and Maddy (Alexa Demie) turn their house into an OnlyFans hub. She also talks deeply about the death of Zendaya’s character Rue with her sister while surrounded with sex toys.
Sydney Sweeney Says ‘Cassie Has This Need To Be Loved’
During an interview with Variety, the actress was asked if she was aware about Cassie’s OnlyFans storyline.
“From the very beginning, you can see that Cassie has this need to be loved. She has a need to be validated by other people,” she said.
“She didn’t grow up with an idea of what a healthy relationship looks like or what a healthy version of love is. Then, throughout high school, she gets treated terribly by boys — she’s just a piece of meat and a token,” the actress continued.
Sweeney feels this treatment “sets up an element of her not respecting herself and not looking for the right things in guys, because they’re not looking for the right things in her.”
“So I understand how Sam got her to where she was in season three.
The Anyone But You actress further mentioned that Cassie’s obsession with being validated is what got the character “excited” and prompted her to launch her OnlyFans account.
Sydney Sweeney On Cassie’s Nude Scenes In Euphoria Finale
But was Sweeney aware of the nude scenes? Yes. The actress revealed that Sam had asked her about how she felt about the scenes.
“I told him, “Look, I’m playing a character.” Do I agree with all of Cassie’s decisions? Would I personally make these choices? No, of course not”,” she revealed.
Sweeney explained that as an actor it was her job to portray whatever is going on in Cassie’s life so that she turns out exactly as Sam visioned her “in the most vulnerable and insane way possible.”
‘People Think They Have Me Figured Out’
Somewhere else in the interview, The Housemaid lead was asked which of her characters she feels close to her.
“I don’t think any of them are,” she said, adding, “Everybody thinks they have me figured out, but they have no clue who I actually am. That’s why I love acting. The whole point of acting is being able to play all these different characters. It wouldn’t be fun playing myself.”
