Disney has finally unveiled the first official look at its much-awaited live-action adaptation of Tangled. The footage was shown at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, California, giving fans their first glimpse of the new versions of some of the film’s most recognisable characters.

The upcoming adaptation stars Teagan Croft as Rapunzel, Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider and Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel. The film is being directed by Michael Gracey and is scheduled to release in theatres on March 31, 2028.

What Did The Live-Action Tangled First Look Reveal?

The D23 presentation opened with an image of Rapunzel’s famous blonde hair stretching across the floor. The camera then moved upward to reveal Teagan Croft dressed as the Disney princess. Croft’s Rapunzel is expected to remain recognisable to fans of the 2010 animated film, with her signature long blonde hair and distinctive purple costume forming a major part of her live-action look.

The footage then introduced Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel. A long-nailed hand was shown emerging from behind a dark door before Hahn appeared in character. Hahn has previously spoken about taking on the iconic Disney villain and appeared to be fully embracing the role during the D23 presentation.

“Thank you! You were right! I am Mother Gothel: Stunning, hilarious, fab, kind, generous — to a fault. Might be a little overprotective, but that’s because she cares so much,” Hahn said.

She added that she loves playing Mother Gothel because she is “the best kind of villain”, someone who genuinely believes that she is the hero of her own story.

Who Plays Rapunzel And Mother Gothel In Live-Action Tangled?

Teagan Croft plays Rapunzel, the young princess who is locked away in a tower by Mother Gothel. Croft is known for her work in Titans and will now take on one of Disney’s most recognisable princess roles.

Milo Manheim plays Flynn Rider, the charming thief whose arrival sets Rapunzel’s journey into motion. Manheim has previously worked with Disney through the Zombies franchise.

Meanwhile, Kathryn Hahn takes on Mother Gothel, the central antagonist who raises Rapunzel in isolation while secretly using her magical hair to retain her youth.

The cast also includes Diego Luna, although details about his character have not been fully revealed. Interestingly, Croft and Manheim were not physically present at D23 because they were filming the movie in Spain.

What Has Milo Manheim Said About Playing Flynn Rider?

Manheim previously revealed that his casting as Flynn Rider came as a major surprise even to him. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor explained that he found out about the role only shortly before the announcement was made public.

“I found out 10 minutes before the news was released that I’d be playing Flynn,” Manheim said, describing the experience as surreal.

The actor has also been preparing extensively for the role. He previously revealed that his preparation included learning how to ride a horse and training to hold his breath for several minutes for some of the film’s sequences.

When Is The Live-Action Tangled Releasing?

The live-action Tangled is scheduled to hit theatres on March 31, 2028. The movie is being directed by Michael Gracey, with production taking place in Spain. Disney has not yet revealed a full trailer or confirmed when the D23 footage will be released publicly.

The original Tangled, released in 2010, became one of Disney’s most popular animated films. It introduced audiences to Rapunzel and Flynn Rider while reimagining the classic Rapunzel fairy tale with comedy, adventure and romance.

The animated film went on to earn more than $600 million worldwide and spawned the short film Tangled Ever After, along with a television series and Disney theme-park attractions.
